ZOMBIE SQUAD CHAT Help/ Tutorials/etc.

Post by Ivan » Wed May 24, 2006 11:26 pm

Hello. I am going to show you the basics for setting Trillain to connect to the zombiesquad chat.

Why would you want to do this?

1. More control

2. More stable

3. Can have it running independant of browser window
-----------------------------------------------------------------

First, Click on Trillian and select Connections>Identites and Connections

First, click on the irc sphere, and make sure the first field has #zombiesquad
then the next box is the server. Type irc.freenode.net:6667

the next 3 boxes are for your nick. More specifically, your primary nick, secondary and tirtieary nick. These are in case someone is using your other nick. (there are a lot of zero_cool's and bob's out there.)

You are now mostly done. You can now connect to the channel and chat with everyone. However, maybe you want to make sure that no one else takes your nifty new nick. To do that will require a bit more work...

Our chat, though available from the java window in our forum, is actually run using IRC - Internet Relay Chat. There are all sorts of things that IRC will let you do, but it takes a bit of work.

Lets register our nick. To do this, we have to message the nickname server to let it know. to send a message to anyone or any server requires you to type /msg first into the chat bar.

If you /msg someone, only that person and yourself see the message.

Note: When I place all caps I mean for you to replace that text with your own. i.e. /msg NAME YOUR MESSAGE would be /msg Ivan Hey, whats up? or /msg Kyle You suck!
/msg nickserv identify PASSWORD Replace password withyour password.

Ok, so now we can message. Lets register our nick.
mesage nickerv and send it a command. If you want to know what commands nickserv recognises, send the help command. (This works with all the other servers as well) So to message the nickserver and ask it for help, type: /msg nickserv help
It will send a bunch of info. the important bit is the COMMANDS list. First off is the register command. Thats the one we want. If you want to find out more info about a command (such as register), type /msg nickserv help NAME OF COMMAND, i.e. /msg nickserv help register
It will tell you how to use the command. For registering a nick, you need to type /msg nickserv register PASSWORD EMAIL i.e. /msg nickserv register braindead brian@zombiehunters.org which would set your password as braindead. If done correctly, it will send back an affimitave.
Now, whenever you log into the chat, nickserv will want to make sure that you are the person who registered the nick. It will ask for your password. You must msg nickserv the identify command followed by your password. Luckily Trillian allows you to automate this:

Back to the Identities and Connections window, you should see a button that says Change. (see first image) Click it. It brings up a new window. (see second image) make sure check mark is checked, and type into the box the following information: /nick YOURNICK;/msg nickserv identify YOURPASWORD

For example, your nick is brian, and your password is braindead:
/nick brian;/msg nickserv identify braindead

Click save settings. Now whenever you connect, Trillian will tell the server that your nick is brian and identify you with your password.

other commands you might find usefull

remember that you can message people.
------------------------------------
/msg NAME YOUR MESSAGE
/msg Ivan-ZS I hate IRC

Result: Only Ivan-ZS will see that you hate IRC.
--------------------------------------
Perform an action
/me ACTION
/me stubs his toe

result: Ivan-ZS stubs his toe

Actions are shown in purple.
-------------------------------------
Change your nickname

/nick NEWNAME
/nick Brian

result: Ivan-ZS is now known as Brian

Note, if you switch to a registered nick, you will have to message nickserv with the correct password.

Thanks, Ivan. I'm downloading Trillian now:
http://www.download.com/Trillian/3000-2 ... g=pdp_prod

I'm going to be lame and stay home this evening to work on stuff like Laundry, ZS memberships and getting ready for Japan. So, if you guys aren't doing anything jump on the chat and say "hi".

<edit> Updated instructions with pictures: http://zombiehunters.org/forum/viewtopi ... 1540</edit>

If you use Gaim (like me)

1. Install Gaim
* on Debian: apt-get install gaim
* on Gentoo: emerge sync; emerge gaim
* on Windows: download the installer and follow instructions
2. Launch it
* Linuxish: command line: gaim
* Windows: Run from start menu or desktop icon
3. Add IRC account
* Click the 'accounts' option, or find 'accounts' in the tools menu
* Select 'add' to create a new IRC account
* Set the protocol to 'IRC' in the dropdown
* choose a screenname (nick in IRC terms)
* Type www.freejavachat.com in the server field
* Press 'OK'
4. Log in
* From the Account Editor dialog, check the box next to the account you just added in the 'online' column
* You can close the account editor now :)
5. Join #ZombieSquad
* In the 'Buddies' menu, select 'Add a chat...'
* From the drop down select your IRC account
* Type #ZombieSquad in the channel
* Press 'OK'

Is there a problem with the chat?

I was disconnected three times tonight and three times last night. There was no real problem Friday.

Is there something wrong on my end or is there a problem in the system?

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I'm glad it's not a problem on my end then.

Cool...I got it to work. I used Trillian ages ago as well as mIRC, AIM, ICQ & the rest but got so burned out on IM'ing that I stopped using them altogether for a long time...too many distractions at work and home. Now my life is a lot more distraction free and I'm back for more online amusement (or maybe punishment...whatever). 8)

Ivan, if you read this, can you put up a new walkthrough for the new free trillian client? I cant find any of the stuff you were talking about before.
