I know how frustrating it can be to want to assist in an emergency and not be allowed!
Ultimately, most volunteers are turned away because emergency and local medical managers with limited resources, focused on emergency response, and accounting for their own personnel were unequipped to handle spontaneous volunteers.

This is why I got involved with our local Medical Relief Corps. I do NOT have a medical background, however they also have positions for non-medical volunteers.
Here is a listing of what the MRC is and how it came to be......................
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_Reserve_Corps

Here is a listing of all the MRC organizations in the country. Contact them and get trained, get your friends to join you.
I am getting some of ZSC025 Chapter Members to train with us as well.
http://www.medicalreservecorps.gov/FindMRC.php

Through MRC, I then got trained to go State level, with SMAT, so I can deploy with either organization to assist other areas as well (i.e. Katrina)
http://www.sortteam.org/SMAT-1.html

Last, but not least, this is a ZS thread of people in different States that have started the process
viewtopic.php?f=43&t=76652&p=1719881&hilit=fema#p1719881

One final thought, google "Disaster Relief Volunteer (insert your town here)" this will bring you to your local organizations such as
http://www.heartswithhands.org/fromthedirector.asp. Hearts With Hands is a local Emergency Preparedness/Disaster Relief NFP organization, that our ZSC025 has partnered with, to help. This may not always be the "in the trenches" assistance, however, this is the heart and soul of these operations. You can go in and pack Food Boxes, etc., to have ready to send out, to these disasters when they occur. This makes it a "load & go" effort, instead of having to "pack, load & go." Not only does this help the organzation to be prepared to react and assist, this will get you an initial contact, so you can be there to assist when the Zombies attack!

If I may add... Another organization that that may be available is CERT, (Community Emergency Response Team). I was lucky enough that training is made available for free, and prepares you to help yourself, your family, and the general public,in that order. I was lucky enough that the program is offered for free in my county. I just wish that all residents would look into it.
I apologize in advance if there is another post somewhere, this is my first post and thought I should comment.

I just contacted my local fire department about CERT as well. Looks like the course here is five weekly 4-hour classes with a test after. The test looks to be a simulated "hands-on" exercise and a written exam.

Thanks

Thank you bgnad!
I hope we have a good turn out!

Mr. NoAm & I are starting our HAM radio class tonight. We hope to be licensed operators at the end of October.

This is another way to help in Disaster Relief. HAM's are always needed!

After the local MRC bought 17 triage kits with money that could have been used to buy a needed blow up tent for a rehab trailer, I am not so much into it any more.

But this said, this is a local problem with the paid staff here.

In general the most MRC's are way better.

Also the CERT is a great place to start.

If you don't have any of these near by, you can start your own one, and I know how.
SO if you have question about it ask.

We are supposed to be working on putting together a local County-Wide Emergency CERT team (yes, I know that is redundant, it's just how it was worded to me.)
Mr. NoAm & I have been signed on with MRMRC & SMAT since February, all we have had is some fun training and exercises so far. We came >< this close to deploying out with Irene this year.
Anyways, I know a good portion of the MRC funding is through grants. The specific grant they used to buy the triage kits might have been for medical supplies only. From what I have learned, from our directors, is there is a lot of 'red tape' when it comes to certain purchases. I am not condoning your MRC's choice of purchases over necessities, just trying to decipher it.

no emergency teams are going to let a bunch of you do anything except maybe get hauled off to jail for not getting out of their way. They already think of this group as a cub scout troop and a bunch of wanna-be hero's. If you don't believe me do some checking.

I guess you missed the point about joining local CERT teams, getting organized with official groups, and also the part that where they say they already have done this, as opposed to thinking it might be a good idea?

I bugged out of south texas during Katrina and headed north ( and I may look back to see some of my old notes are still around and post them properly one day), but stayed through Rita when it hit us.

I can tell you from experience, that the local CERT teams are needed, used, and called upon much more that some may suppose.

we had millions with out power for days, 100's of thousands w/o power for weeks, and thousands w/o power for up to a month. Cert teams and a general request for all willing volunteers were called in over the radio stations to help at several locations which would change daily.

they were asked to help organizers with (manpower) supply lines, mobility efforts, etc, to get needed water, food, and most importantly ICE to the areas still impacted.

In a Zombie Attack... i can't really say depending on infection rate etc... that may be a "hunker down" and shelter in place as moving around may be more dangerous than trying to help..as you may become infected yourself....BUT in the aftermath of a disaster... well the CERT peeps are definately used and appreciated.

Let's take it further....what if some of the "Zombie" weren't really Zombies, but just targeted as zombies. What if for some reason, you knew them to be clean, but they werent' able to present that to the powers that be and were slated for camps, or executions.....what would YOU do? And how would YOU go about doing it? It's not a personal jab at the poster, but a springboard for a question. What would you do?

This kind of discussion isn't really what this post is intended for (At ALL!)
This is how we can help and work with our communities, in the event of a disaster.
Furthermore, the type of discussion you are looking for is considered illegal on ZS.

Please don't post in this thread unless it is about actually helping victims of natural disasters.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. But I was being serious and literal. What I meant to say, was how do we help those who need help but who may still pose a threat to others somehow? I would hope there would be a safe, sane way to manage to do that.

If zombies were to attack, i'd probably be like shane off the walking dead. also, i'd go shopping for a new home some where out in the country side. vacancy or no vacancy.

Which implies illegal activities, we don't discuss those things on ZS.
Thank you :D

Basic trauma care, if you have no skills, looks something like this:

-Maintain/regulate body temperature. Blankets, clean water, and shade is needed. Exposure kills, and it's worse when a victim is going into shock.

-Keep them conscious and aware. Small talk, questions about next-of-kin, and blood type are great ways to keep the person thinking in the present instead of dwelling on the event. They can also reveal concussions or other traumatic injuries.

I'm limited on time, but I thought I'd drop this here. Red Cross and other elaborate more, and the best prep is to get the training now so you can use it when you need it. I can personally recommend the CERT training program after participating in a two-day class with ZS:025.

If the infection is spread through bites, why would you want to risk infection and/or him turning into a zombie, put him out of his misery, the most humane thing to do.

When it comes down to zombie bites, what I said is realistic.
