What is the "Current Events" forum category for?

Post by kyle » Mon Dec 04, 2006 10:48 am

The description of this forum category is as follows:
"Current Events: Stuff that’s happening in the world that may pertain to our survival."

This means we are looking for posts related to disasters or other events that can very likely lead to a man-made or natural crisis.

Examples of stuff that does NOT go in this forum category:
  • - Someone getting voted into a political position that you don't agree with
    - The latest story about governments talking shit about each other who have been at it for the last 50 years
    - Other political posturing by political leaders that is not directly causing a disaster to any of us but will definitely incite a flame war in this forum that the mods find very annoying.
    - The latest story about some lame celebrity.
These would fall under "politics", which is not what we use this forum for.

Stuff that does fall into this forum category:
  • - The latest natural disaster that is harming or threatening to harm people's lives such as hurricanes, floods, or attack from mars
    - The latest man-man disaster that is harming or threatening to harm people's lives such as a war, chemical accident, social upheaval, or attack from mars.
    - Laws that may effect disaster preparation. Debating them doesn't fit in here because, well, you can't change it by just bitching on the internet. Take your soap box somewhere else. Like Joe Friday, we just want the facts.
Other general front page news and other unrelated stuff can be posted in "Off Topic" if you don't think we're smart enough to read the news on our own.

Thanks!

OK, it seems we need to visit this again. This forum is to discuss large scale disasters. Let me quote the definition:

disaster:
a sudden calamitous event bringing great damage, loss, or destruction

The following things do not meet this definition as it pertains to this forum:
- A single murder, double murder, house burning down that kills some family members. That's a personal tragedy, and likely a disaster to the people involved, but it's certainly not something that effects a wide swath of the population.
- People getting stuck in an elevator/tunnel/train car/etc for a day or two. It sucks, but is certainly not a disaster.
- A company no longer offering a product in your area, while you may miss Jolt Cola, it's certainly not a disaster

I hope this guides you in decided whether a thought you have should be posted in this forum. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask the mods or the Arbiter of this section.

A comment on "Current" also. If you have a follow up on an item, such as an arrest or indictment of a old thread, it is good to update the old post and bump it back up to the list. That's true even if the original item is year(s) old.

What's not ok is deciding you want to discuss an old post or an old disaster. If that's the case, please start a new post over in OT and link back to the one here for data. Posts here should be factual accounts. We have Off Topic for discussions.
Don't confuse a belligerent and aggressive attitude with the strength, training, and conditioning needed to prevail in a fight. How do you know you have the Will To Win, if you don't even have the will to train?
