I've only read headlines, I feel like it's lucky more weren't hurt or killed. Prayers for those that were.

I wonder, with New Orleans being in a swamp/bowl, with hurricane damage being possibly unseen, if this is something that well happen over the years there... More than the average infrastructure failure

I heard about this shortly after it happened. Fortunately it ocurred at a time of day where that area does not have a lot of traffic and there were not many people on the work site. There were "only" 112 people there.

I saw the video of the collapse and it happened fast and was catastrophic. It had to be a defect in the building construction or process. There was nothing else going on and the failure appears to be above the 3rd floor. There was no adverse weather of any kind.

The people involved in project do not have a quality reputation in the area. I have seen other projects they have done locally as well as buildings they own and manage. Lets just say R&M is not a high priority and "builder grade" materials is a premium finish in thier projects.

This will not end well for these folks. This is a very serious loss of life and unless they can prove it was not thier fault there is likely to be criminal charges under state law. This is getting intense scrutiny at local, state and fed levels by people with no real sense of humor.

To add to the matter the city building inspectors involved in this are likely to have some serious questions posed to them. They recently inspected site. They are also being investigated by the feds for taking bribes with one person already under indictment for an unrelated matter.

The personal injury attornies are already running ads for those injured. Several businesses have been closed as a precaution and the $ losses are real for them.

The last missing person was recovered.

BTW Hard Rock has nothing to do with the construction. They are only toly licensing their name and will be the operator of the hotel.

This is one key partner in the contruction.

Hard Rock's brand will still suffer a negative hit because of this. Some vacationers will elect to stay at different places because they worry it could happen at any Hard Rock venue.

The first lawsuit has been filed already...this is my surprised face :|

However a bit of excitement especially since I can see it through my office window is that they are going to use explosives to topple the cranes. The top of the cranes weigh 145,000 lbs BTW.

https://www.nola.com/news/article_23aa6 ... cc6bd.html

To add to the excitement there is a 24 inch gas main going through the center of the street next to it.

Is its evil if I pop some popcorn to eat while I watch the fire works? :?

The locals involved are noted and have reputation for using only the best quality paper mache in thier structjure and only the best quality tinsel for wiring.

A link to video if the implosion of the cranes. This is a better view than I have since it is about 2,000 yards +/- closer.
https://www.nola.com/news/article_2a43f ... 9ee92.html

The demolition people are saying Sunday at the soonest.

If you think you have a shit job?

I am watching the through my spotting scope the demolition guys in pairs being lifted in a man basket with a single cable crane up to attached high explosives to the damaged cranes. So they are dangling in the breeze attaching explosive charges and det cord while being blown around by the wind. There is nothing to attach the safety harness to other than the basket which has a single point of failure at the crane.

What could possibly go wrong with that?

I need more popcorn. :D

Says the guy who plans to watch the demolition while sitting in a building atop a 24" gas main... Risk is relative.
