Thousands of injured and homeless.
The Disaster in Pictures from the BBC.

I'm unaware if Iran or Iraq has appealed for international aid, but I believe the UN is responding.

That part of Iraq does not have many people living there.

Those government block houses that are so popular in that part of the world do not stand up to tremors well at all.

From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd—
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother

Thousands homeless and spending chilly nights in tents. That's got to be particularly miserable this time of year in a mountainous region.

A while back I played around with hacking together a short term use cabin tent heater out of an empty olive oil can. Lost steam mid project and made it into a rocket stove instead. Events like this make me want to return to that kind of project should something similar happen in northern New England (which I recently learned is on top of a geologically active fault line).
