The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a mandatory nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at 2:20 p.m. EDT.

I was driving through rural MS in 1999ish when they broke in with an EBS alert that was clearly an old recording because it used the term CONELRAD.

The the station stopped broadcasting for about a minute and then went back to the previous show. Obviously the station technician found some old recording and put it on by mistake.

Still it was unexpected and pretty creepy being that I was in the middle of nowhere and it was the only radio station. It was took me 20 minutes of driving to get a cell phone signal.

I called my wife to ask and she said I was paranoid and should keep my eyes on the road. :clownshoes:

When I was a kid we pretty much ignored those tests as they occurred all the time and there was never a problem. When they reduced the frequency of the tests and started using the system for actual warnings instead of mostly tests it became more interesting. Our stations mostly announced a warning of the test beforehand which was probably smart. The station gets a lot of calls when they do a test these days.

I'm really surprised that no one caught on to the post being made the day after the test was supposed to take place... and that the test seems to have failed.

No, I actually heard the test. I did not realize that was the point you were trying to make.

I noticed it yesterday. I was at the barbershop, and the TV there was set on Comedy Central when the alert went off. I mentioned to the others there that I didn't recall ever seeing a test alert on the cable channels* before, only on the local affiliate channels and local radio stations.

*DirecTV.

Odd, never heard anything here in my AO, not even over the weather radio in my office.

Test worked here in Ak - with the usual crummy button audio.

Interesting. I just checked the weather radio and it's working, and earlier I asked another local ham who also does storm spotting for NOAA and he said nothing came over the air and he didn't see anything on his TV (he wasn't even aware there was supposed to be a test).

Glad I saw this thread. I didn't notice an alert either. I was expecting all of the cell phones in my office to buzz, like when there is an Amber Alert but noticed nothing.

How will I ever know if a dozen of Kim Jong Un's finest are inbound?

In 1971 when attending Ohio State, I was sitting in my dorm room when an alert came on "this is NOT a test".
Turned out to be a flub but I had a spooky 10 minutes or so.

The propellers on the NORK ICBMs are pretty loud.
