Looking at it my first thought is that this is arson.

Absolutely Horrible. Babies thrown our of windows, people leaping from the roof, the whole bit. Londoner's can't seem to catch a break lately. Possibly hundreds dead.

A resident claimed it started with his faulty refrigerator but the firemen and police are not saying. The place was identified as a fire death trap several years ago by a group who kept trying to bring attention to the problem. The plastic cladding was likely the last straw that caused the whole thing to go up.

They are now saying at least a dozen. The numbers sadly, will likely be much higher. The rescue crews are working the gruesome task of searching the building.

It's a sad story. I wonder if anyone there had bought one of those parachutes for getting out of buildings? I remember seeing a few articles about them after 9-11. I would guess probably not as they are expensive and probably require practice to use safely. As I understand it this was low income housing so probably not a luxury that could be afforded. It's also one reason I won't live in a sky rise (that, and I am scared of heights :ohdear: ).

I don't want to second guess the London authorities who have had more than enough to deal with in the last month or so but... there are some post disaster lessons learned here that are starting to emerge.

The government really has no clear idea of who or how many people are missing -

http://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/pol ... ar-BBCJT2f
During the chaotic first day of the investigation, the police's casualty bureau was said to have received 5,000 calls. Around 400 people were reported missing, but Mr Cundy downplayed the figure, saying it added up to more people than actually lived in the block.

One person was reported missing 46 times, he added.
Partly this is because it was a fire and some were burned beyond recognition. They also don't seem to be able to keep track of who was living in government housing. In this case:

Two kids were found because the family members looked really, really hard for them.
He expressed frustration that the girls had not been identified because of police protocol that prevents hospitals and police from giving out details about victims.

“I was trawling hospitals and yesterday morning I found two of Farah’s children in St Mary’s,” Ms Chaoui said.

”It’s not because authorities contacted us but because we begged and cajoled a nurse who took pity and said there was a child upstairs who matched our description.

"When we went we noticed that her sibling was a few beds down, no one even knew they were related. Police are not identifying people... they are using protocols for terrorist incidents to manage civil disaster.”
Some things to keep in mind with your preps.

Skyscrapers, apartment complexes and similar buildings in Melbourne, Australia are being assessed to ensure that this disaster does not repeat there, waiting on other states to roll out new requirements and hotfixes

I don't live near a high rise but I don't think anyone in the states is paying attention to what is happening.
