I just stumbled upon this morning.......yet it comes from a tabloid, and I was wondering if any of you guys have a more reliable source to confirm it?

I am not sure what your question is. Everything in the article is true.

How about a link to NASA?

Daily Mail is not all bad tabloid junk. Just skim past all the jenner/kardashian crap and any story with "pins" in the title and there are some good articles. They do not filter most of the stuff American journalists seem to do.

Nasa's, been mentioned already
NOAA Spaceweather prediction page http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ Some of the stuff is difficult to understand if you not a nifty geo or astro-physicist ;)

Spaceweather.com is a little more understandable and updated frequently http://www.spaceweather.com/
Note: worthy mention is their PHA (Potentially Hazardous Asteroid) table.

Fixed it for you.

Look through the reader comments at the Daily Wail and you will get a good idea of the IQ of the target readership. Try going up-market with Fox-News.

The most useful thing a Daily Mail quote does is identify idiots to put on your ignore list.

I'm just guessing you called me an idiot (against forum rules). So 50 posts in 4 years, who's puppet are you?

I won't even bother trying to be offended, you aren't worth my time.

Have a nice day.

The Daily Mail has a history of outright fraudulent reporting.

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Daily_Mail

HIV denial, climate-change denial, absolute fraudulent reporting, faking quotes, anti-vaccine nonsense, and so on.

As a rule, immediately assume everything in a Daily Mail article that's not a direct quote is false. Then go double check on the quotes. I'm not saying it's all lies, but generally if tabloids are carrying the story and nobody else is, that's a good sign it's not good journalism. Some good alternatives to the major networks and state-run media outlets are Al-Jazeera and Vice, depending on the subject matter. Be wary of RT, which is Russian state-backed propaganda.

I have a thread on vetting information and news sources you might want to take a peak at. It's probably about time I updated it some more.

The Guardian is a self admitted leftist mouth piece. Not saying they don't have a point but they have problems too.

"Climate change denial". Are you saying global warming/climate change is a real thing?

Yes and we have to take action before it it too late and become irreversible (again).

Here is the Daily Mail shilling for Climate Change denier Robert Redford:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... hange.html

Clearly they are wrong (again)

Solar flares are still real though.

Solar flares are indeed a big issue, though the report claiming the US government is actually preparing I am a bit skeptical of. Maybe a little superficial stuff so they can "claim" they are prepared, or hardening of key continuity of government stuff, but I don't see the government actually spending the billions of $ it would take to actually really prepare the US infrastructure for such an event.

I don't have a specific source to suggest, but I'd actually try to find a physicist/astrophysicist/astronomer (or a reliable science journalist) on twitter who's into solar flares and follow them.

The last tabloid "ZOMG this asteroid's going to hit earth!!!!" one of the astrophysicists I follow on twitter basically said "Guys, I promise, if one's ever going to hit us I promise I'll tell you!" (@ AstroKatie) I laughed pretty hard - but I also believe it.

Twitter's like every other source (Guardian, CNN, NYT, WSJ, WaPo, any TV network, Enquirer, all sorts of online news sites, random posters on ZS ) - you need to vet your sources, they all have pros & cons. Even if the pros heavily outweigh the cons, it's good to keep in mind what flaws/mistakes that particular source is going to be more prone to. Which is why I feel I need to have more than one source, and more than one kind of source, with biases/flaws in different areas. Triangulation make info more likely reliable.

This was in the news just yesterday:

http://news.yahoo.com/sweden-solar-flar ... 26613.html

A flare impacted Sweden's radar systems and they had to temporarily shut down air travel.

Carrington scale flare event aside, I think a large enough flare could definitely wreak some havoc on our modern systems.

http://www.sws.bom.gov.au/ Australian Bureau of Meteorology has a very up to date site.

For real-time alerts, you can sign up for email alerts for solar flares through them at http://listserver.ips.gov.au/mailman/li ... lare-alert Pretty cool stuff, but expect to get a lot of flare alerts from time to time, since the system sends emails for anything over C9.

Came to post this. This youtube channel is very good for spaceweather and predicting impacts it will have on our rock.

You might want to vet S0 a bit. I wont go into it here, but they have been accused of some pretty shady stuff. I would just say be suspicious of them.
