More proof that the policy "Hugs not bullets" policy might not be as effective as desired in regards to containing the violence.

The message sent by this attack is a pretty clear to me: "plata o plomo".

The part of about the children hiding from being slaughtered and then walking out is especially instructive. Drug gangs are completely and totally ruthless and revel in carnage.

My earlier wild guess appears to be wrong. The local cartel did not conduct the ambush. Sounds like the enclave has had peaceful, albeit strained relations with the local gang for a while, and the local gang actually showed up in force to help secure the site of the first ambush.
