"The Survival Beast" blog/site

Post by teotwaki » Fri Jul 29, 2016 4:22 pm

Just discovered the site. http://survival-beast.com/

Here is his introduction:

"Hi Survivalists,

My name is Dan Hawke, and I’m an outdoor wilderness survival expert and enthusiast. I'm also a proud husband and father to two young boys.

I once served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 15 years and have been an instructor for the last 5 of those years.

I am well versed in various forms of martial arts due to having studied and practicing them for more than 10 years, including Boxing, a Black Belt in Karate and a Yellow Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I also fairly recently became a certified instructor in Krav Maga.

Personally, my favourite weapons of choice for self defense are Tactical Knives such as Bowie Knives, as well as Hand Guns.

I enjoy spending my free time fishing, hiking and camping with my family, while passing on my survival knowledge to my young boys.

I will be compiling personal recounts of my survival journey, as well as sharing special tips and useful
survival information on this website of mine: http://survival-beast.com/

Do drop by and learn more survival tips and recounts based on my personal experience."

Looks like a bunch of 'buy this stuff so I can get an affiliate payout' link lists. On top of that, a lot of the gear he's linking doesn't even look that good.

Once I saw that this:

Thanks. That is the hardest I have laughed in a while. Sometimes a little says a lot.

What? You don't envision a survival scenario that includes cracking walnuts around the camp fire?

I wnet back to look a little longer at the "Must Have" list he is hawking:

"20 Things Every Outdoor Survival Beast Absolutely Must Have"

VSSL kit is nice but I don't agree that it is a must have
Water Filtration is a must have
Triple hammock a must have? Really?
Thermarest chair a must have? Really?
Heimplanet tent. How is this AND a 3 person hammock a must have?
MSR Flex 4 System Cook Set. Agree that a pot is needed but no reasons given as to why this set is a must have.
Compact blanket. Not sure it is a must have unless there is no sleeping bag in this list....
goTenna Off-Grid Text & GPS? Would be far better to carry a SPOT rescue satellite beacon.
Headlamp. Some sort of light is a must have.
Stove is a must have but fire making gear and skills are more important
Hand warmer as a must have? What about gloves or a lightweight jacket?
Brook & Hunter MT-BL-AXE? No. At least a person should have a good knife but not this gadget.
Air pad is nice but a foam pad is foolproof and lighter in weight.
Coffee press a must have? No.
Fire starter. Yes. Also learn how to use one.
Solar Fire Starter. Cute gadget but I don't like the heavy marketing push to get one "free"
Flashlight is good but redundant to the headlamp that is a "must have" and seems to be another marketing push
Paracord bracelet also looks like a marketing push. I wear a watch and carry my hank of cord in my pack.
Firestarter that is what used to be called a permanent match and they required lighter fluid.
Survival Biz card is not a must have. A good multitool would replace this and the tools on the weird little axe.

So I give the list at best a 6 out of 20.
