How do Zombies detect the living

Post by learntwoshoot » Sat Jul 12, 2014 3:45 pm

So basically here is my question,

Do Zombies hunt for the living?

If so how?
Sight?
Sound?
Smell?
All the above?

I don't think so, given that most of the time is limited to a few bites and the vast majority will die within a year due to the extreme diffusion of infenction with consequences shortage of prey if that was the case.
I think they use the sound on the hope to find a prey.
And the eyes for confirmation of it, but since their are dumb, remain stuck on presence of sound, even when they don't find their prey.

one theory is that Zed can detect the emanation of CO2 of the living. other say that they hear sound familiar or related to Human

I find it improbable because all living creatures emit carbon dioxide then would be constantly surrounded by a sensory bombardment even in the event they have some special receptors to locate the prey.
Also the CO2, as any gas, disperse, therefore the detectable quantities would be insufficient for them.

My belief is the Z can detect the electromagnetic aura of the living when in close proximity. This is in addition to the steadily deteriorating normal senses.

There isn't a correct answer to this.

They don't exist, this means the people who write about them can say whatever they want and be totally right.

I've read fiction where zombies are basically magic and can sense life force. They did not use any of the 5 senses like we understand them and "see" the life force of the living without eyes.

In most fiction zombies are just dead people and only have the same senses that the living had. This provides several issues in that their senses will lesson over time, and something seems to magically be preventing this from happening.

With no flow of nutrients and no cellular regeneration the cells of the dead would decompose and the small injuries to the eyes would make all zombies completely blind before long (months to years - that's a guess).

The primary hunting senses that zombies display in most fiction are: sight, sound, smell.

An area I'm particularly fond of is the notion of how zombies identify potential food sources. How does a zombie know what is or is not potentially food? They're drawn toward sound and light. They're drawn toward things that look like food. This should mean that zombies are drawn to billboards and signs with people. Mannequins through windows cannot be smelled and certainly look like food. Without knowing more about how the brain of a zombie works it's impossible to theorize how the zombie recognizes another zombie isn't food from 100 yards away. This should mean that in masses of zombies (like large hordes in The Walking Dead) one zombie would see another zombie from a block away and both would walk toward each other thinking the other is food. At some distance each would independently decide the other isn't food and stop hunting.

That's a simple idea, but if true, it means that large masses of zombies would essentially rarely go anywhere (or that it would take a lot to move them all very far). Zombies go for easy food. If they see a possible food source 50 yards away, they would walk toward it. If each zombie in a large crowd sees the zombies on the far side as potential food they're basically going to be a writhing mass of zombies pushing through each other to find food within the crowd of themselves.

Predominantly sight, the best thing to do is emulate their actions, so my advice for preperations would be....get practacing infront of the mirror.

Zombies(big Z) don't exist-only in a Hollywood directors mind. zombies (small z) as in the diseased, the starving, and the dying will be the ones to avoid, they wont last long after "the collapse" so just avoiding them may be enough.

Yeah, its impossible to discuss this as the creature doesn't exist, but in the spirit of nerdy fun I'll throw my worthless two-cents out there. I would guess/agree that it is probably mostly sound followed by sight. Some zombie books will cover "hunting" by smell to an extent (like they might notice someone doesn't smell like rotting flesh ) but its not like the undead would instantly have the noses of hound dogs post-mortem.

Personal opinion. If we encounter a “real” zombie infection, the vector will be a fungus. If any particular detected human does not have the right fungus emanations, the rest will attack seeking “food” or procreation. Fungi communicate via contact, and airborne spores.

Well, let's look at how humans detect movement; sight and sound are probably the big ones. That being the case, I would be inclined to think that smell was not as important as the other two. Just because they become zombies doesn't mean that they get a better sense of smell.

This just leads me to question how zombies are seemingly always able to sense undead flesh from living flesh...
