ZS web site now on emergency power (Possible Sandy downtime)

Post by whisk.e.rebellion » Sun Oct 28, 2012 11:59 pm

We just got word from our hosting company (right in the path of Sandy), that they have initiated their "'inclement weather procedures'" which include verifying site coverage teams, emergency contact numbers, adequacy of onsite fuel supplies, as well as, emergency tools & materials."

They're as prepared as we are, but might still get knocked out by this storm.

We create nightly backups (uploaded to a "cloud" storage system), so even if our host goes down, we won't lose any content (other than what's posted in between backups...so, we'll lose some shit if the host goes down AND all our hardware gets hosed).

Crypto edit: Changed title to reflect current diesel status.

I bought extra milk, bread and eggs just in case.

Ugh, hosting company can't weather out one storm? What kind of reliability is this shit? Surely they have generators and emergency personnel to be on site to run it huh?

You laugh, but that was a thing all the way back to the early '80's, along with one other essential at that time that is now a relic: Movies.

My parents owend a video store starting in like '81. In bad weather it was milk, eggs, bread, and movies like C.H.U.D. and Back To The Future. :awesome:

You should see the cost difference between 99% availability (or uptime) and 99.9% availability. It's crazy how much of a price difference you see when you ask vendors to start guaranteeing their uptime. And every 9 you add on the end increases the cost of doing business a lot.

Marginal returns for the purchaser in most cases. That extra .9% will be under the most challenging of circumstances and therefore likely the most resource intensive.

You should have read and acted on the "generator sound suppression kit" thread when you had the chance.

It's probably a lot more difficult than it sounds, but is there any simple way of mirroring the forum to an alternative location (a SG1-esque "alpha site") and making it fail over in the event of problems?

Eg. we could host a mirror here in Europe somewhere, say.

Feel free to just  at me if this is really difficult and/or expensive ...

Its much more expensive than difficult. It'd effectively double the hosting cost of our online presence.

That said, we're running nightly off-site backups for the duration of the storm, and if it goes down hard, we'd have the option of running in a limited capacity on either the dev server or just provisioning a new service if the Board decides to. It's just not something for which we have the cash to spend before it happens.

Thanks for the answer, if I happened to be an eccentric billionaire I'd offer to help but alas I'm not :(

I wonder what the super volcano guy in new york from "Doomsday Preppers" is doing right about now. I think nat geo should do a follow up and see if his fantasy knives and broken glass in the hallway did the trick!

I was always taught that for every 9 you add (going from 99% uptime to 99.9% uptime, for instance) you can multiply the cost by anywhere from a factor of 2 to a factor of 10.

I work on a facility that supposedly has 99.98% uptime. It's expensive.

Do you think if we add gift certificates for China Panda, or something like that, we could get better uptime?

The ZS server, like all other physical hosts in the datacenter, is now on emergency diesel generator power. We've been told that there are approx [REDACTED] days of fuel on hand, and roads are clear for fuel trucks.
