Killing or Running

Post by apocalypsepal » Mon Nov 09, 2015 4:17 pm

Came across this scenario in a book.

Six zombies surround you in a glass phone booth. You have a small, pocket knife.

Do you try to kill? If so, how?

Or

Do you run? If so, where?

Reaching way back in my memory here, but as I recall the doors in those phone booths actually open inwards, folding in the middle like a passenger jet's bathroom door. I'd crack it open a few inches, bracing it with my foot and allow one of the zombies to press its face up to the crack. Then I'd use my pen knife to deliver a field expedient lobotomy.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

What is a phone booth?
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd—
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother

Let's assume (as anyone would) that the end of the world means that phones no longer work.

Pretty bold. But, potentially effective.

So they used phone booths in Abu Ghraib?

Yes indeed. Will Ferrell was a prisoner there

I kept thinking about this and the main worry is that if just one zombie limb gets in the way the door cannot fully close. When performing the lobotomy the zombie needs a shove to make them fall away from the door. The other problem is that outside pressure on the door forces it open so the foot performing a block of the door should be well braced.

I would agree. You would have to be certain that you could keep the rotting flesh out of the door opening AS WELL AS sure that no additional shamblers show up to the party. This was where I had trouble with figuring out this scenario.

Yes, I think that I would have run somewhere else rather than take shelter in a phone booth. As Stercutus alluded to ("What is a phone booth?"), phone booths are no longer a staple of the American landscape.

Well, I was working with the scenario as presented. As I said, the doors of these old telephone booths opened inwards. And there was no way to lock them. Anyone/anything outside would have to exert very little pressure to push their way in. So whether my tactic is attempted or not, bracing the door closed with something - most likely your hand or foot - was going to be a necessity anyway. Otherwise this would rapidly become one of those "Too late! You're already dead!" kind of scenarios.

FWIW. planting your foot against the base of a door and shifting most of your weight onto it is remarkably effective at keeping it from opening any farther. My solution envisioned allowing the door to open just far enough so that a zombie hand could not get through the gap. I'm talking a couple of inches of gap here; one that would invite a mindless, undead ghoul to press its rotting face against the gap and allow the narrow blade of a pen knife to do the job that any well-versed zombie fighter expects it to do.

presumably you found that photo in the aftermath of one of the London anti Austerity/Anarchists protest/riots.....those photo booths are very old fashioned these days and are becoming sought after as "Antiques".

That would make for a great story but here is the real scoop

"The original Banksy London Phone Booth caused quite a stir during its brief lifespan in 2006. Appearing overnight on a street in Soho, London, this bent and broken British Telecommunications phone booth laid forlornly on its side, axe protruding from its side, blood pooling underneath.

Featured in the Banksy film “Exit Through the Gift Shop”, this sculptural graffiti elicited a myriad of reactions. Londoners divided themselves into two camps: those who appreciated the spirit of the art, and those who decried it as vandalism. British Telecommunications praised this as stunning visual comment on BTs transformation from an old-fashioned telecommunications company into a modern communications services provider. “Perhaps this official” analysis captured Banksy’s meaning in creating the sculpture.

At the same time, 2006 saw the introduction of Facebook beyond college campuses. MySpace topped 75 million users. While these innovations fall under the realm of social media, are they really so social? Facebook, MySpace and other electronic forms of communication allow individuals to hide behind a computer screen, pretending to be that which they are not. Perhaps Banksy was mourning the passage of good old-fashioned human communication when he created his famous sculpture."

Citation please. There is no proper translation of what it means in arabic to the Iraquis so any German translation is more than suspect.
