Request: Post Your Bug Out Bags

Post by Gunny » Thu Jan 08, 2009 1:17 am

Tacked for a few days for visibility:

It seems as the forum gets older, we have fewer and fewer people posting their bug out bags. IMO, this is an important aspect of the forum and is one of the easiest ways to help a member get their bug out bag(s) on track.

Don't worry if you don't have an amazing bug out bag to start out with. Hell, click the link in my sig line and you'll see I started out with a backpack. My first aid kit was even more laughable. That being said, it's fun to go back and see where you started and watch your progress as your knowledge increases.

So, in short, take pictures of your set up and post them here in its own thread for people to critique or drool over as the case may be.

Thanks for reading.

Does your BOB at least have: water, basic tools, fire, food, first-aid kit, and shelter?

From my INCH Thread, but whatever

Main Bag and pockets:
3x Chemlight, green
Ranger Blanket
Off Deep Woods, big-ass can
7x Clif Bar
7x IMP (Canadian ration) + MRE heaters for them
Wire saw
Waterproof container full of matches.
Bug net, which can also be used as a little pouchy deal
Bic lighter (need two more, prolly should pick them up)
Water purification tabs
Sewing kit
Headlamp, Rayovac LED
Shemagh
Folding shovel + paracord
Absurd amount of zip-ties
KFS (knife, fork, spoon)
Alcohol stove, Vargo Triad Titanium
Canteen cup + stand
Canteen (not pictured)
Duct tape, black (not pictured)

Valise contents:
My shitty FAK
MSR Miniworks water pump + 8L Dromedary
One set of Woodland Digital (MARPAT) BDUs
2x underwear
2x T-shirt
5x socks, various makes
Polypro top and bottom
Kukri
CRKT First Strike
Shave kit (not pictured)

Columbia Frost Ridge one man tent ---> USMC 2 Man tent in the mail, going to upgrade.
Blackhawk shooting mat (I sleep on that...heavier than a foam job, but I like it. Plus I can keep my water from freezing in the winter while having a pillow)
CADPAT goretex bivvy sack
Nylon Sleeping bag ---> upgraded to a down one today, a CF Outer sleeping bag. Much warmer, since three of four seasons here are fucking frigid, I figure it's better to be too warm than too cold.

Weighs in as 'too fucking heavy', but the majority of it is the food and water.

The Winter Addon (which still needs a pulk sled and snowshoes):

Image

Image

It contains:

Additional Down Sleeping Bag
Arctic Mitts
4x Extra Wool Socks
Fleece Liner (that constricts me like a boa...I'll figure out a way to solve that issue somehow)
Full Winter Whites (top, bottom, ruck)

Winters round here have been mild lately, but then again, I'm heading north, and a cold snap can kill you, sure as a bullet.

That's my BOB as it was a while back; I've since upgraded to an EMR and think of my setup as more of an INCH (I'm Never Coming Home) setup. The BOB/INCH thing is weird for me because, basically, I don't see the need for both. An INCH works as a BOB, but unlike a BOB, it takes into greater account that things might not be better after 72 hours. Anyway, it's a more ambitious project, but here's the link to the ol' Zulu BOB thread.

I'll post a link here to the EMR INCH thread, as well.

Sorry the photo links are down at the moment, I either need to start paying Photobucket, or replace every image I've ever posted with a clickable link so it doesn't take up so much bandwidth.

So should they post here or on their own thread, because if'n they post them in their own threads, they won't be here, and if'n they post them here, they won't be in their own threads. So which is it young feller?*

Weird, coz it seems to me like there are still several BOB/GHB threads a week. In fact, they've seemed so common that I've felt badly for not replying to them (just not enough energy/time at the moment). Maybe I'm just seeing the same ones pop up and not realizing it. Perhaps the forum is at the point where the older members have already posted their bags and the new members haven't yet had time to do so. :)

And yeah, I was totally confused by the OP too. I was like, but there is already a BOB pics thread. Is he locking that and making a new one? Or does he want us to post them in here too? wait... what?

I'm in the process of doing a big overhaul on my bag. It'll probably take me a month or two to get to the point where I have time to shoot and post it.

I think thats definitely true, that lots of the 'old' members have already done their BOB threads, and we have yet to see a lot from the 'new' members. Not to say we haven't seen some, just not as much as there are new faces! :P

I haven't posted mine because, well . . . pictures of bags and lists of gear make my eyes glaze over after a while. Sorta like people listing bands they like in a "what bands do you like?" thread. It all sort of becomes blah and even really good stuff becomes not compelling after a short while.

So I'll get right on that.

72 hour kit:
http://zombiehunters.org/forum/viewtopi ... 14&t=39927" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Dayhiking kit:
This is an update on my earlier post. This kit is derived from, and fills the same purpose as the earlier pack, but with enhanced capability. The idea is for a hiking daypack that would contain the essentials for one or two nights out if there was an unexpected emergency. This would be intended for 3-season use. The importance of this was demonstrated recently when a party of dayhikers was trapped by rising water at a local creek. Even after they were found (They were able to call for help on a cel phone) emergency services was unable to get to them. They dropped some gear to them from a helicopter, but were unable to land due to the nature of the gorge and the wind conditions. The group was forced to spend an unexpected night out. Some suffered mild hypothermia even though it is summer.

This would also work as a 72hr kit by stretching the food a day. (or adding a little more before going out the door)

Significant improvements include; larger capacity than earlier system, provision for shelter, enhanced water purification, and a better bivy sack.
The system is contained in a Kelty Redwing pack (i think 3100) there is room to spare.

This is a minimal FAK. The sawyer extractor has been removed.

The small orange bag is the bivy, The large orange bag is a fleece sweatshirt, the black bag is a water filter. The little green bag behind the cook kit is a rainjacket. The large green bag is the tarp and stakes.
