Upgraded the bear defense.

Post by Woods Walker » Wed Jun 21, 2017 12:38 am

Over the last few years I have noticed an increase in my bear encounters. There has been an increase in problem bears. Now with a report of an attack a few weeks ago (not serious but this reminds me of NJ years ago at the start) its time to upgrade my bear defense.

On my pack compared to the previous spray.

Before anyone says the obvious. Yes I have plenty of guns. This isn't about guns vs. spray rather having more options.

There have been a couple of fatalities recently. If only we had a thread about bear defense.

It always seemed to me that a good way to avoid a bear attack is to be with more people. If there are 4 adults walking in the woods I can't see a black bear wanting to attack you. If those 4 people are armed with guns or spray I would think you would be pretty safe. I would also follow the usual bear advice ( make noise, don't come between a cub and it's mother, do not try to ride the bear like a horse). Do bears commonly get rabies? I have no idea but if so this might change things.

It is a good thing bears are shit for climbing. You should be pretty safe up in the tree. They also have great vision and communicate their thoughts well.

I think if you climb a tree it gives you a straight down pistol shot as the bear climbs up after you? j/k

Followed your lead and bought a can of bear spray. Spending a few weekends in bear country, at east one will be backcountry camping in a provincial park where firearms are not an option. Bass Pro didn't have the holster in stock, so I'll have to shop around or DIY.

I would also add you should buy two and test the first one. I remember trying to use a fire extinguisher many years ago and learned at the worst time I really didn't know how to operate it. Nothing like reading the directions in a panic

DO THIS FOR LIFE SAVING EQUIPMENT sorry for being a bit harsh (ok, metaphorically screaming at you), but this should be the first thing you do when you buy anything...learn how the blasted thing works.

Lots of bears around here of both types (Black and Grizzly)

If you are carrying bear spray, make sure it's immediately accessible. On your pack doesn't help when you need it 5 seconds ago. I keep mine on my belt, it's a pain in the ass to carry but it's there and quick if I need it. I never have had to actually use it, but have pulled it out on two occasions. Thankfully both times they were just surprise encounters, and not predatory in nature and yelling/whistle blasts encouraged both bears to go away. (both black bears by the way) Being noisy in the bush is a way better deterrent to stop surprise encounters. If they know you're there, they'll leave 99% of the time.

Practice. I hate the stuff, mostly because it works REALLLLLLLLY well on me. Part of our SAR training is a "Bear aware" module and one of the things we do is deploy expired cans of bear spray so we get an idea of how they work and how far they spray. *Spoiler alert* It's a lot less distance than you want it to. Maybe 30 feet for the good ones, more like 15-20 feet on some. When we were doing this there was a very slight breeze coming towards us, just enough for the cloud to drift back at us slowly. One good sniff was all it took for me to not be able to see and have a very unpleasant coughing fit for a full minute or so. So be very aware of the wind when spraying.

All of my really scary bear encounters were while hunting and trying to be as quiet as possible.

Amusingly enough, while out on a hike with my Fiance last night I had the opportunity to practice. Turns out my can of bear spray was expired.... in June of 2016

So we took the opportunity to set it off once we were in a secluded spot and hadn't seen anyone else for a while (we were hiking pretty near town)

All total out of a 225g canister I got about three seconds of spray time (3 blasts of 1 second each) and a cloud that you could see to about 15 feet. I'm sure the spray went further than that as the devils club stalk I was spraying bent over under the force of the spray and it was almost 15' away, but I couldn't see the cloud further out than that.

Just in case people don't realize this is sarcasm, to be absolutely clear: BLACK BEARS ARE VERY GOOD CLIMBERS, DO NOT TRY TO HIDE FROM A BEAR IN A TREE. Grizzly bears will just dig at the roots of the tree until they bring it down with you in it, so don't climb if you see them, either.

And yeah, their vision sucks.

Is there a 21 feet rule for bears? Or is it 30 feet plus because bears have 4 legs and can probably accelerate faster? What was the range on one of those sprays again?

There are three generally accepted ranges for bear defense pepper spray. They are. " Too far. Too close, and extra spicy human sauce, "
