Replacing old headlamp, best off-the-shelf option?

Post by KnifeStyle » Mon Mar 27, 2017 4:03 pm

I've been running a Petzl Tactikka for backpacking and outdoors work since 2007-8, been happy with it while knowing it's obsolete. REI dividend just arrived, I'm looking at their new Petzl and Black Diamond options and even the budget ones run 200 lumens while my old one barely hits 40. Time to have some fun and upgrade. My requirements:
-Must have a red LED, I used the red filter very often and would love to have a true red LED finally.
-Flood matters more than throw, I'm not a runner.
-Reasonably durable, I solo backpack and need it to get me home.
-Will not be instantly outdated next year, it may be another ten years before I upgrade again.
-Ideally available from REI to use my dividend, or at least competitive on Amazon.

Are you looking to use 3xAAA or open to other options?

Like you, I had been using the same Petzl Tactikka for ages, and was a huge fan. (The type with the flip down red filter cover, right?) Unfortunately, I let a friend borrow it and never saw it again.

I upgraded to a Tactikka+ this year, and I think that it may check off everything on your list.

Red LED (NOT with the flip down red filter cover of the old Tactikka, an actual Red LED)

Three lighting modes with a max 250 lumen output.

Runs off 3 AAA batteries.

Take a look:

Are there any other features you're looking for?

I am completely open to power sources as long as it's nothing overly exotic. If I can charge it USB or swap it with gas station batteries, I'm happy.

The Storm has IPX7 rating to the Tactikka's IPX4 for the same cost as well as an actual red LED
