Attack the Block

Post by Stercutus » Mon May 20, 2019 1:59 pm

This movie could have been called "Hood Rats vs. Aliens" but Attack the Block was much more clever?

It is a very formula driven monster movie based upon the old school monster movies.

1- Discover Monster
2- Monster Becomes real threat
3- Government is unable to protect you
4- Fight Losing battles with monster
5- Discover Monster secret weakness
6- Defeat Monsters
7- Roll Credits.

About 90% of monster/ alien movies are that way. This one relies on the unique dialogue and actions of London pre-adult, feral, slum dwellers to carry the film and it works for the most part. The movie also presents the UK with it's unique set of problems not found in the US such as the shortage of firearms, lack of good melee weapons, unarmed police and a number of resource poor impoverished wards of the state.

Acting isn't bad. The "kids" for the most part are actually pretty good. The dialogue starts off nicely then trails off as the action picks up. Special effects are about in line with budget which is to say passable.

I give about a 6-7/10 which is right around where IMDB has it.
These days of dust
Which we've known
Will blow away with this new Son

But I'll kneel down wait for now
And I'll kneel down
Know my ground

If you watch it again, you'll see the head of the street crew is John Boyega, Finn from The Force Awakens and Jodie Whittaker the nurse Sam, is the current incarnation of Dr. Who. Not to mention Nick Frost in a hilarious turn as the local drug lord.
Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home

Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis
No-one move a muscle as the dead come home
