The Boys

This Amazon Prime original series is the antidote to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Proof that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Great performances by Elizabeth Shue and Karl Urban.
Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home

Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis
No-one move a muscle as the dead come home

It is a movie about comic books so I am not so sure it is proof of anything. The writers do their absolute level best to make the "Superheroes"; Dickish, insane, murderous, casually violent, depravedly indifferent, reckless, sloppy, rapey, drug addled, shallow, perverted, hypocritical, traitorous, treacherous, unprincipled, amoral, immoral, etc, etc, etc.

It seems the only thing that motivates the heroes at all is drugs, money, adulation (mostly in the form of polling numbers) and sex in no particular order. Since none of them have any redeeming qualities whatsoever at some point it becomes impossible to see them as anything but the cartoon caricatures that they are supposed to be. It seems only fair that they are tools of a morally bankrupt Hollywood media machine and this is not without irony for the actual RL producers and actors. A mirror turned inwards can be a harsh criticism. Projecting that guilt on to others is even more so.

I wanted to like the show but the one dimensional aspect of the characters made it all too predictable. Once you realize that the heroes ONLY act in their base self pleasure, navel gazing interests it gives up the plot points and what happens next without even trying.

In the MCU the characters have flaws but the flaws make sense. When Starlord loses his shit and gets the Universe snapped at least he did it because he cared about something. When Dr. Strange realizes that he spent much of his life doing the right things for all the wrong reasons he learns something about himself. The creatures in this universe are all the ultimate nihilists and don't learn a thing. This makes it nearly impossible for anyone having achieved maturity to identify with them.
You go 'round and around it
You go over and under
I go through

It was a figure of speech.

I enjoy your critiques of film and television and can always count on them being well thought out. I sometimes wonder if you are channeling Roger Ebert. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Haven't you described 'The Comedian' from 'The Watchmen' perfectly? And Neegan now that I think of it.

Hmm...except that the Comedian and Negan could be killed fairly easily (minus the plot armor) if that became necessary. Someone as powerful as Homelander would be a skosh bit more difficult....And as much as the TV show has already deviated from the comic book, I don't know if the resolution in the comic is still viable for the show writers to use. I guess we'll eventually see how it all plays out. Image

I completely agree with you. When the comic came out, most of the comic book community was wowed, but I felt like it was overblown teenage torture porn. It was so over the top in it's atrocities that the message is lost and it almost turns the bend towards glorifying disgusting, morally reprehensible material. And there was an interesting commentary in there and interesting characters that are just lost by the carnage (the Female and the Frenchman's friendship and her struggle to channel her compulsion to kill into something meaningful were really great bits that were completely overshadowed, IMO).

The saddest part is, the TV show, for all of its terribleness, actually tones down the depravity significantly. The comic is much worse.
"When you can't run, you crawl, and when you can't crawl..." "You find someone to carry you."

"She's tore up plenty, but she'll fly true."

Garth enith wrote the comics. The tv series is comparatively tame.

Preacher is another Garth enith comic for example.

This show is awesome, can't wait for season 2. But like was previously mentioned this is based off of a comic and the show is tame compared to the comic, and the comics are great...
