This is a long Mother Jones article about militias. I considered posting it elsewhere in the forum but felt it was best right here. The writer definitely has a left-wing dislike of militias so let's avoid the politics and maybe learn something from the mistakes those militia folks made. You can glean a lot about the various militias' operating styles and gear as well as their failings on a number of issues.

Full article here:

Some mistakes that I saw:

Letting anybody in camo clothing drive/walk into the border camp
Relying on cell phones and cheap Baofeng radios
Tolerating overt racists
Vague chain of command
No systematic way to ensure people at the camp were actually qualified with weapons, survival or first aid.
Allowing videos to be taken without any censoring of faces, vehicle license plates, etc.

I recall at some points that the reporter was asked by militia members if he had turned on his chest cam so that may be construed as permission.

Problem with this, is the whole thing is intrinsically political from the get-go.

Regardless of any conclusions, the scary part is when the militia thought the border patrol were "bad guys" and vice versa. Just shows how communication is paramount.

ZS has quite a number of threads about patrolling or defending bugout locations, camo clothing, weapons and so on.

These militia types are going out and performing smilar activities. We can learn from their mistakes without discussing their politics.

Oh, I wasn't saying that it was a useless post, quite the contrary. I'm just thinking it's like playing with fire and that we gotta really dig to find lessons as opposed to bein' on easy street :awesome:

Digging for lessons can in itself be a worthy journey.

The article's author made some comments about the attraction of militias and noted the shared sense of purpose, camaraderie and possibly the excitement of the "danger" factor.
