I am really glad you enjoyed it. Thanks everyone for the positive feedback.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Marcus was finally where he wanted to be. After a week of escorting the fuel rods and then trying to put the base back together, the traveling started. The meeting with his councilman and handler went much better than expected with minimal cussing and yelling. A shower and a private car brought him to his destination.
The hospital room had not left his thoughts since he had unloaded his friend from the helicopter. The woman in the bed slept quietly while Marcus thumbed through her chart. Her name in bold at the top:
Remissa Blume
To Marcus she was just Rems, an inside joke from her military peers in reference to her being radioactive.
As he looked through the charts, he read the progression of her care; the surgeries for the two gunshot wounds, the broken ribs from the CPR, the fractured ankle from the fall. He was reading the last page when he realized she was awake.
Marcus spoke as if they had been talking all along, “It says here, you get to go home soon Lieutenant, how do you feel about that?” He couldn’t help but smile when he looked up from the chart to her serious expression. Her groggy response came amid yawns, “Fuck you Marcus, you know I want payback. Those east coast assholes are not gonna kick the shit outta my team and get away with it.”
Marcus walked to the side of the bed and lifted up the sheet to reveal a pistol under her left thigh, ”I see your head is still in the game.” Remissa sat up a little, took a drink and pushed her hair out of her face. Fully awake now, she caught Marcus up on what she knew, “I saw your reports on the fuel rods, it looked like you got most of ‘em.” Marcus nodded and sat down on the chair by the bed, “Yeah our handler said it was a success, but it didn’t feel like one. You should have been there with us.”
She laughed and said, “I think I would have preferred that. You didn’t kill Raf did you?” Marcus shook his head, his tone was flat and matter-of-fact, “No”. Remissa looked at the ceiling and continued, “Good, It wasn’t his fault. I heard Ez got that private transferred to an Intel school. He must really be something to get Ezra’s attention.” Marcus could see her eyelids start to get heavy once again, “You should sleep Lieutenant.”
He waited for a moment and watched as she began to drift off. She responded when he put his hand on hers, her voice barely audible, “You get our next assignment yet?” Marcus couldn’t tell if she was asleep or not, ”How about you go back to sleep and I send you some reading material to keep you busy?” Marcus leaned back and watched her sleep for moment.
He closed his eyes and went over the day she had been wounded. A few minutes later a nurse paused at the door and decided she could take her patients vitals later. She closed the door quietly and let them both sleep.

the end

Next book should be out in the fall.

Don't take this wrong. It is more of a teaser and in no way should you think this next book is done. Life bit me pretty hard over the last year and I am just getting back into the groove.

The savannah ended unnaturally. A clearing opening up in a perfect line before the great grey wall of the city. The heat had taken the greatest toll on their bodies. The dryness making it hard to hide. The dust, the snapping of grass stalks and twigs, clues to the eyes and ears of their pursuers. They had been stalked for hours, hunted on the plains. Their stillness highlighting their fatigue. Only one of them moved. He passed his attention over the horrific injury and then the faint heartbeat of the man next to him. The plant extract had slowed his heart to a tiny, half felt, pulse against the tip of his finger. Satisfied that he was both alive and not bleeding from the shoulder that no longer had an arm attached to it. He let his senses search for the predators that hunted them. He could smell the feral human coming closer. Hearing him in the scrub. Pushing his leather clothes through dry branches. Pulling the cloth veil from around his neck to over the top of his head helped break up his outline as he moved toward the sounds. He caught the first glimpse, a bead on a string in the hair of his adversary. Its shape and color flash in his brain as unnatural. Koris watched him breathe and matched its timing. Felt for him with his mind. His motion easily mimicked until Koris looked like a pale shadow uninterrupted by the brush between them. The slow draw of the pistol on his chest, silent in the desert air. The world seemed to change. The light changed, dimmed, as the pistol slid up against the ferals head. It froze and turned towards him as he tried over and over to pull the trigger. The pistol fell from his hands and he pulled the knife from its sheath as the ferals all too familiar face transformed into Valerie’s.

His eyes snapped open. He waiting for his heart to calm and used all of his senses to make sure the dream was not a warning from the environment in which he slept. He slowed his breathing and felt his body. The only thing out of place, a small desert scorpion nestled in the crook of his elbow. Why is Valerie so important, what am I not seeing? He tried to examine his subconscious for clues from the dream.
