I could only come up with 2 new pistols that meet all your specifications.

That's all that is out there within those parameters. If you could go up on price, consider used, different ammo choice, non striker fired, or non single stack I could list quite a few more even if you only went up 50 bucks more. One option I didn't look at was California style (not just sold in CA but that's what they are called) these are normally double stack guns but due to ammo restrictions the magazines offered are limited to 10 rounds.

What about a subcompact with an extended mag? That opens you to a lot of options.

I can't say enough about my 9mm Shield. With the extended mag you get a full hand on the grip, and it is surprisingly comfortable pistol to shoot, as well as extremely accurate. The mag is single stack; with the extended mag, you get 8+1, which seems plenty for most circumstances. And it is is fairly small, although not pocketable like the Ruger or KelTec 9mms and nothing like a P32 or LCP. I got mine for $400.

I know it doesn't fit the stated parameters but I am thinking about getting a Glock 43 and think this discussion could be helpful.

Please... Go on...

Springfield XD stuffs. XDS 9mm can be had for less than $400. I can't speak to the 9mm personally, but I like the 45.

Shield is currently the best choice in something close to this category in my opinion. The bersa would be my number 2 pick.

Beretta Nano. Great pistol. I really like the one I have. Slightly heavier than my buddy's Glock 43, but seems to shoot better as it absorbs the recoil better. Easy to find under $400 and comes with 2 magazines.

I like the smooth profile and simplicity of this pistol. Seems to come out of my pocket without a lot of external items on pistol to snag on.

another $200 in the cost of the gun would only buy 800 rds of practice ammo and you need several thousand rds per year to be worth a hoot with a handgun. So don't scrimp on the quality of your defensive pistol! Get a really good one, even if you have to buy a used one. Testfire before buying such, of course.
