Ruger American PISTOL?!?!?!

Post by JeeperCreeper » Wed Dec 30, 2015 12:52 am

New pistol released at midnight to be sold at your local FFL come January 1st: The Ruger American Pistol

Seems to be vastly improved SR series (which I already love and own).

Check out their website. There are some leaked articles and reviews from a day ago, but now it's official.

Thanks. Ruger is making a lot of smart moves, like the introduction of a precision rifle that is much more affordable than what my gunsmith can provide at the same cost: http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2015/1 ... n-308-win/

I'm extremely excited about this, I've been in the market for a more comfortable full-sized, and my GF's SR9 has always felt really comfy.

Interesting that they don't appear to be including one in .40 S&W right out of the gate.

I know the 9mm version has a 17 round mag, but no one whose reviewed it has mentioned what the capacity of the .45 ACP version is. It seems everyone is just reviewing the 9mm model.

I'm wondering if the .45 ACP model will have a 10 round mag or a 13 round mag. Either way, I'm interested in the pistol and may pick one up once funds allow me to.

According to the first link the .45 ACP version has a 10 round magazine.

Thanks, quazi.

I was kind of hoping the .45 ACP version would have a 13 round mag, but I guess Ruger just decided on a 10 rounder instead.

Easier to sell in states with mag restrictions.

Yeah, that's true.

Regardless of the mag capacity, the gun looks interesting and I hope I can get my hands on one in the coming years.

While it doesn't have the manual safety I like, at least I missed it if it did say that, everything else is ambidextrous like it should be! someone is finally showing love to us south paws.

.40 is a dying caliber. It was a compromise does neither well.

I'll admit I didn't pay much attention when this came out, didn't even bother to hold one at SHOT. does someone want to give me the TL;DR synopsis for what makes this competitive with the glock/M&P/XD/every other plastic gun? I don't mean that in the "this gun looks like crap" way, just that if I was a new handgun buyer I'd be pretty overwhelmed by the options and very few of the (very good) options out already seem to have enough differentiation to convince someone to switch from whatever they arbitrarily picked first.

Off topic but how did you get into SHOT?

9 shot poorly for me, 45 grouped well, but I feel like my splits were longer than other comprable 45s.

I actually almost purchased one a few days after they came out, but I already picked up 2 rifles over that Holiday.

BUTTTT... I did shoot one at the range last week.

The trigger is excellent. You don't notice the longer reset when shooting it like you do when playing with one at the gun store. I would need to put more rounds downrange, but I'd put it 1% below the top tier striker fired triggers (PPQ, VP9, TP9, P320). It is world's better than my XD (and friend's Glocks and M&Ps) and a touch better than my SR9.

The grip was nice, no chewing up that seems to be the fad since MAC mentioned it "hurts my wittle fingers" because of the square back.

It seemed to group as nice as the best of them, but I think my groups were off because I just finished shooting a Steyr which is 100% the opposite handgun in every way possible.

Either way, if you can grab one for cheap and are interested, I think it'd be a great buy. But I would have a hard time buying one over a $100 cheaper Ruger 9E or Canik TP9.

When we first got these in the shop we compared them against Ruger's SR9's. The take down is simpler on the American but just about everyone preferred the feel of the SR9's more. The SR's magazine disconnect sucks but it is easily removed. Personally, for the same money is go with the SR9E, a spare mag or two and a couple hundred rounds of ammo before I bought the American. Different strokes for different folks though.

Considering how many agencies and departments are glacially slow to change (and how many shooters will also be), it still seems like there would be takers.

Presumably the increase in the cost of ammo over the last eight years also had something do do with the decline of 40SW...

If a department is getting new guns (I don't see the American getting any LEO adoption) the odds of them getting new guns in 40 are slim.

While I don't doubt it would sell, and we will probably see on eventually, I imagine they want to meet the 9 and 45 demand before bringing in the 40, much like Springfield with the XDS. The shop I worked in sold more 9s than 40s and 45s combined(if we are talking platforms that have all 3 available(excluding 1911s))

I am now interested in the Ruger since they offer a thumb safety version. I wished that the Army would move to this pistol

My biggest gripe with this pistol, my only real gripe, is that the slide release barely works on the right side of the pistol. The left side lever works fine. When I investigated the guts, it seems that the right and left side slide release is not symmetrical, the right side is much more flexible, and won't disengage from the slide almost no matter how hard you push down in it. Since I'm right handed this doesn't bother me much, at least the lever is present, unlike my xd and xds, left side only.

It's my one complaint for an otherwise solid pistol. I'd buy one.
