Dead of Night: Jonathan Mayberry

Post by gimmejr » Sun Mar 04, 2012 9:06 pm

I just finished this book and it was a pretty good read.

" prison doctor injects a condemned serial killer with a formula designed to keep his consciousness awake while his body rots in the grave. But all drugs have unforeseen side-effects. Before he could be buried, the killer wakes up. Hungry. Infected. Contagious. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang…but a bite."

I might have to go ahead an pick that one up. I'm currently awaiting his next Joe Ledger book (Amazon claims/ed April) and I've enjoyed every damn one so far...this coming from a guy who hardly ever reads outside of forums and Wikipedia. Actually got sucked in from reading the back of Patient Zero and the first few pages in a closing Borders. If this one is even half as good as his other work, I'll have me some great paper-based entertainment.

I thought this book was really good. From start to finish, and there really weren't any parts where the story dragged. Parts where characters were introduced for no other reason other than to have a gratuitous, violent death...definitely not a bad thing.

I must read that! I love his Rot and Ruin & Dust and Decay books, also Patient Zero, The King of Plagues not so much.

Edit: I just realised there's more books from the Benny Imura 'universe' on iBooks. But I'm off buying online for Lent :gonk:
I shall have to wait...

Yes you do. I'd be interested in your thoughts about it whenever you do read it. And I was unaware there was other Benny Imura books. I will have to look into it. How was Patient Zero?

Very good, the Benny Imura series is (supposed to be) geared to the adolescent audience. Whilst Patient Zero isn't, it introduces the main protagonist Joe Ledger and is the first in this series. I'd recommend it if you like Maberry's other fiction.

Yeah, I knew the Imura ones were for younger audiences, but I was reading some reviews about the Joe Ledger series, and it looked to be hit or miss with most of the reviewers--We atleast have this common bond of zs, and whatnot, so I will check it out based on your recommendation. Thank you. I am about to start a new book though, after that will be Patient Zero.

The only Zombie Joe Ledger book is the first one 'Patient Zero'.
I read one more in the series but it just didn't interest me as it had no Zombies. Hope you like it :)

ahh, ok. Thanks, I was just wondering about that. I just read that there is a sequel to Dead of Night in the works, so if you do like the first one, keep this one in mind :awesome:
