I've said it before and I'll say it again, when the world goes to sheeeet... I'm going naked with my combat boots and helmet. Maybe a chest rig.

As for prepper chic (I didn't read the article, I'm just here to talk shit), it's pretty easy to spot the prepper type a mile away. In the same family are many veterans as well. Lots of neutral colors, patches, velcor, pockets, paracord, pockets, non-work boot boots, pockets, velcro, patches. I love when people worry about printing but are rocking 5.11 gear and a can 95% certainty guess that they are rocking a alienware/crossbreed/insert other name IWB holster with a glock in it.

Not hating on it, just saying "gray-man" has turned "gucci-gray-man" in many ways.

How about we combine themes? Try combat boots, helmet, chest rig and camo meggings?

I am actually surprised how many (will say the vast majority) of people in loud 2nd Amendment, 3per or general Liberty clothing aren't carrying. Whenever I see that stuff I instantly check their waistline and unless they are pocket carrying a mouse gun they are seldom armed with more then bravado and a smartphone.

Jeeper expanded on the point woods made. You can easily spot the "prepper" or "wanna" be a mile away. I've got a couple friends that never served in the military yet dress like they did. The 5.11 tacticool bullshit. Grey/tan/or multicam pants, neutral shirt usually with some short of tattered American flag either on the chest, arm, or back, probably with skills. Some sort of work boot/tactical boots. A knife on the hip (extra cool bonus tactical points for a fixed blade) or a folder on a molle belt loop (never in the pocket). And will always bring up some sort of tactical training or something. They are about as grey man as a hipster in a country bar.

Personally I'll be rocking what I usually wear, like today. a Calvin and Hobbes tee with "stary night" pattern, blue faded cargo pants, flip flops, knife attached inside my pocket and that's it. If I need I could throw my Amazon IWB holster with a belt and look the same. Shit hit the fan, I'll be rocking the same thing but with probably my trail running shoes on instead of flip flops so I can get where I'm going and I doubt anyone will bat and eye.

Granted this is for my location. If I go where like eastern WA, I'll throw my actual work boots ok, my boot cut hiking pants, and my carhart jacket that's nicely faded and has just the right amount of stains.

So again, I'm clothes oriented, however never like the article. And it sounds like most here are too. So let's just dismiss this guy and continue bashing his stereo type!

I've been one since the 1950s...
Would you spot me as a prepper?
Little old lady in tennis shoes, black pants, a colorful blouse, and knit jacket (if it's cold), carrying a striped purse.

At home, I tend to wear more flowing hippie-type clothing; capes/ponchos in the winter and saris in the summer don't really say 'prepper' to me, either

Bash a stereotype rather than read, think and then spew?

Pink sweaters make for good camo

Hiking boots, faded Carhardt overalls, a reflective safety vest, clipboard, and full brim white hardhat. A lot of construction guys are transitioning to tool backpacks nowadays instead of tool boxes so I should be good there.

Add in the fact I'm a stocky dark tanned white guy and I feel I am invisible in any urban or suburban roadside environment.

We should not think of camouflage as simply military clothing but we could go back to the definition of the word:

"Camouflage is a method of avoiding detection by mimicking the surrounding environment"

It is all about disguising, confusing, evading, misleading and avoiding detection.

Great point teotwaki, I always forget the true definition. Being able to blend into an environment be it woods or a Fremont solstice parade (Seattle thing, look if you dare) is using camoflauge. So being a grey man means being as bland or eccentric as the environment you are in.

I usually conceptualize it as "social camouflage," but "when in Rome..." works too.
