5.56 AK'ish options

Post by Bender711 » Sat Feb 18, 2017 8:53 pm

Hi all,

Considering options for a new long gun. I'd like something that uses Ar15 magazines and has a folding stock. I was looking at building myself an AK but after adding up all of the parts and tools I'm into nice factory gun territory.

Right now it looks like my options are the Faxon ARAK 21 and building an AK with one of the fancy AR mag conversions. Maybe something else? Any one have any opinions on these or maybe some better options?

I don't really have a purpose for this gun other than I think the above features would be cool and a nice change from my AR.

What about a piston AR15? Or one of the SIG Sauer variants?

The Sig MCX would also be a good option, thanks.

A piston Adams upper can be had for about $420ish for a basic carbine.

I forgot about the KelTec SU16C... and I just sold mine like 3 months ago.

If you're on a budget, the Keltec is a great option. Mine ran really well, I just got bored and sold it for another AR build. You can find them around $500 give or take.

That thing looks exactly like what I'm looking for! Thanks Rick! Playing with a new platform should be very entertaining. MSRP of $1500ish sounds promising as well.

A Tavor has an AK-ish gas system, takes AR-15 magazines and -most importantly IMHO- it's pretty bitchin' looking.

Kalishnikov Concern builds a 5.56/.223 variant of their Saiga semi automatic rifle in Izhevsk, Russia.

It doesn't get any closer than that.

ETA: just read the initial post in its entirety- I have a habit of shooting from the hip sometimes. You say you want something that takes AR mags?

Umm, you do realize an AR takes AR mags, right?

Why do you want an AK to take AR mags? And please do yourself a favor and don't custom/homebrew/bubba a hybrid.

I grew up shooting R1 (fal), R4 and R5(galil) rifles. Can't go wrong with the galil...That said, I'd really like a Sig 556...Not the crazy mxc thingies. Next to that maybe a ACR.

Ar47s are butt, a lot of 556 aks are butt, piston ars are butt. Maybe look at an IWI Ace.

I'm not so sure about the Ace. That flippy floppy dust cover deal it's got going has me concerned. I mean it's nice and all, it just looks so. I dunno, flimsy?

IWI Galil ACE 5.56. Not an ak, not an ar, takes ar mags, eats any ammo, if you can find one and are willing to stomach the cost, they are supposed to be great rifles. I gave up on finding one (watch they will be available next week lol) so I bought another AK, Arsenal SLR107R (non folding full size ak)

Freuderlocks

Edit: Arsenal also has a slr106 series of rifles, chambered in 5.56, not an ak-is option, its an ak. I am under the impression that they discontinued those models but I could be wrong. (I checked at some distributors, they are still in stock, whether im right about them being discontinued IDK). The down side to the 106 series is the magazines are expensive, but not more than you would already be paying for top quality circle ((10)) bulgarian magazines for an ak anyways.

Hope this is helpful.
