Rat Rod / Mad Max Ithaca 16 gauge shotty suggestions

Post by JeeperCreeper » Tue Dec 01, 2015 12:50 am

So my beater/camp shotgun, an ancient, slam-fire-able Ithaca 16 gauge featherweight, needs revamped because I need a project.

Long story short, my uncle gave it to me after it was stored in the rafters for a decade. It was covered in surface rust and the stock was mended with duct tape. I ended up cutting the barrel down to 18.5" and giving it a two-tone black and primer ceramic engine block paint job that looks kinda like carbon fiber (thanks Youtube). I Retaped the grip of the stock using gorilla tape (super custom, bruh). I left the wood stock alone as it is beaten up and looks weathered.

So, I want to make it Rat Rodded out. I want it ugly, unconventional, but functional. I need ideas that will make it look like something from the apocalypse, Mad Max style.... while remaining tasteful and not too ridiculous.

Ideas so far:
-Hose clamp front bead sight
-Might mess with the paint job, stripping it and oxidizing the metal with acids and then clear coating it.
-Beat the wood up more and do a new stained color
-Heat shield on the barrel... any new ideas for a home made one??
-Maybe heat wrap the barrel (or part of barrel) like a cafe racer motorcycle exhaust
-Carve the wooden stock (unoriginal but maybe some new twists on it will be fun... maybe something like: "business" with an arrow pointing forward and "party" with an arrow pointing back. #MulletShotgun.
-Paint a mini shark's mouth on the barrel like an old fighter plane

Any crazy ideas from you zombie freaks are welcome, danke

Slap that bad boy on the bottom, forward of the tripod.

Along the lines of carving the stock, maybe decorate it with brass tacks like some Native Americans did to their carbines? You could maybe do some appropriately themed etched metal or scrimshaw inlays, but that would be way more difficult/expensive.

I actually want to do something similar with a single-shot 12 or 10 gauge. I'd like to cut the barrel down to 18.5", and start cutting the stock down bit by bit until I find the shortest length that is still semi-usable (keeping the OAL to over 26", of course). I was planning on putting on the 1.5" "Nitro" limbsaver grind-to-fit pad.

Unfortunately, I went to several gun stores in the two biggest cities in AK and couldn't find a single-shot shotgun anywhere. I finally found one in the third biggest city, but they wanted $200. I actually started filling out the paperwork, but it turns out I forgot my ID that day.

I like the claymore text idea but it would have to go on the stock and not foregrip since it has the corncob style wood on the pump. And metal insert idea is good too. I will just have to think of a creative metal thingy to put in since I want it different.

Do those zip guns still jam all the time?? I always wanted one....

You might want to check out this youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/77ratduster/videos he does a lot of fun steampunk and mad max gun builds.

If you like the claymore idea, clamp a claymore to the foregrip :)

If you go with the shark mouth idea for the barrel, why dont you also embed some spent brass bases into the stock as some kind of kill count :)

If you are feeling particularly gruesome wrap some barbed wire around the barrel, using one of the spikes as a front post :)

Posting this to bump it cuz I will be starting my project in 4 days as long as the weather is warm enough to paint (I might not care)

Anyone think this paint job is too vanilla??

It looks good in the video, but I wonder if it would just look cheesy and fake when you're holding it in real life. I haven't ever tried to paint something to look worn, so I really have no idea.

Spray it with some brown paint, let dry about 15min. Then tie to the bumper of your car and drag it down an unpaved road for 1 mile.

Knock off the crusties and call it done.

I might be a little late to the party but what about using a bit of sheet copper for a heat shield / barrel shroud. Wouldn't shield much heat but if you perforated it with a punch and hammer it would certainly look angry.
