Ruger 10/22 or MArlin 795?

Post by BushcraftJared » Thu Feb 20, 2014 9:30 pm

Hmmm quite a good amount of information out there on each of these. However, I am unsure which one to go with. I am on a budget, however I am always inclined to pay more for something I will never feel the need to replace. I do like the accessory options with the Ruger. Mainly the flashlight mounts. Are there accessories like these for the Marlin 795? I cannot seem to find a rail to mount a flashlight on the side of the gun. This makes me want to wait and save for the Ruger 10/22. What do you guys think? Do you prefer the 795 or the 10/22?

Basically, the marlin has a nicer stock barrel, the sights are about even, the stock triggers on both a just "meh", the ruger will have more after market parts. I had trouble tracking down 795 mags but there were plenty of the ruger bx25 mags. I myself think marlins are great lil .22s if you plan on just having a plinker that's just stock. I have both a Model 60 and 795. Now if you want to make a match grade .22 with all the bells and whistles, go with the ruger. I personally don't want a 10/22 because I'll spend too much money buying all the aftermarket parts to make a super duper 22 tactical sniper rifle, lol.

never shot a marlin but owned the ruger

I liked:
The factory mags (10s and the bx25); super reliable
Didn't have any ammo finnecky-ness in mine
I put tech sites on it (maybe you want to check out the 50yr anniversary one?)
Easy shooter, reliable, functional. Trigger wasn't phenomenal or anything, but I didn't hate it either.

You can get them sub-300$... Hard to beat imo. And you can save up for upgrades as you go if you really want.

If aftermarket goodies is what you want, go with the Ruger. The Marlin doesn't have the aftermarket toys like the Ruger, but it is very accurate out of the box. The 795 I have is not that picky about ammo, and the Pro-mags work very well in this rifle. I do own both rifles, both have Tech sights and 25 round mags. I myself find the Marlin in my hands more often than the Ruger, It's lighter and seems to be more accurate.

Prefer the Ruger.

I love my 10/22 but it's very finicky when it comes to ammo. It only likes CCI. Everything else gives me jams.

Interesting. I have had the opposite, though I almost exclusively use standard-velocity ammo and the only ammo that gives me trouble is the intentionally underpowered stuff. Was yours new or used? Sometimes folks do goofy stuff like throwing rubber gaskets behind the bolt carrier.

10/22s are fun. I've not tried the Marlin personally.

I have several 10/22 or varying ages (one is 20+ yr old) and all work well. That said I am not sure it is worth the price premium of the Marlin.

If you want after market parts go Ruger but either should work well.

I bought my 10/22 Takedown new. Ever since I installed a new extractor from KIDD, I get less jams with Federal. Maybe only 1-2 jams per 25 round magazine. As for CCI, I've never had a jam.

If the question were "10/22 or bolt-action marlin" I'd tell you to get the marlin. I've still got my childhood rifle, a marlin bolt-action .22 with a tubular mag. It's still a great rifle. the tubular mag is awesome because it feeds /everything/ from those tiny little .22 short CB caps up though CCI Stingers and mini-mags.

But, if you're dead set on a .22 semi, I'd say get the ruger. The 795 is a junky plastic rifle, so you wont get the Marlin advantage of better wood than Ruger uses.

The 10/22 has so many aftermarket parts that you can literally buy stripped receivers and build them up yourself from scratch. Which you won't do yet, but in 5 years you'll realize your 10/22 only has a couple Ruger parts left in it.

Got my (adult) daughter a Marlin 795, have had a 10-22 for decades. I did buy another last summer, $171, so about the same cost as the Marlin.

Marlin - magazine sticks out, 7 shot//Ruger, 10 round flush magazine.

Weight, Ruger slightly less weight

Sights, as others have noted, a wash. Easier to mount a scope on the 10-22 from my experience.

Trigger - about the same for both, aftermarket triggers for Ruger can be had, don't know of any for the Marlin.

I bought an aftermarket folding stock for the one 10-22, I'm going the swap out the old works into the the factory stock and sell the other. The folding stock weighs more than the action/barrel....

Either would make a good pick - I like the flush mags over what the Marlin has.

^^^^^^ I agree with this 100%. The old Glenfield-Marlins are the best, with the engraved squirrel in the palm swell.

When I was buying my first .22lr, I decided to go against the grain and opt against the 10/22 in lieu of a Remington 597. The barrel was a bit nicer, and liked the bolt hold open after the last shot that the Ruger didn't have. That being said, I don't think anyone has ever gone wrong with a 10/22, the magazines and accessories alone make it worth it.

Of course now I only shoot my SW15-22. Man I love that gun...

Hey guys I ended up going with the Marlin 795. I purchased it new for $120 and the best price I could find for the 10/22 was ~$250. I like that with the marlin the stock stock can be used to put extra rounds and supplies in it. It shoots just as good as any 10/22 and I found a 25 round magazine from MidwayUSA that cycles rounds fantastic. No jams after about 500 rounds yesterday. Once I am out of college I may save up for the takedown ruger 10/22. But for now I am happy with the Marlin. It also fits my kelty back very well. A little better than the ruger except I do have to remove the mag on the marlin.

I'm glad you got a gun. I would take a Marlin now vs a Ruger later. That being said I love my Ruger. I got mine for $220 cash and it came with high visibility sights and an extra BX-25. I also own the Marlin which is a great little honey too. They're both reliable and as accurate as the shooter. If you like after market parts though the 10/22 is a true Barbie gun, you can dress her up real nice.

So true, but it scared me. I think I would put way to much money in the 10/22 customizing it. When I got my first Glock, not a month went by before I upgraded $150 worth of parts! UGHHHH

That can be a problem. I know with mine I love the sights so much I can't put another stock or scope on it. I did get an arch angel kit and a red dot then returned them because they blocked my high vis sights. Promag makes some pretty nice high cap mag for the 795 but they are a little tricky to find.

Like the ruger . But sold it . Kept my mossberg m44 and the nylon Mohawk . My only ones I won't part with .

I recently got a smith&Wesson m&p 15-22 it's a .22 and comes with 25rd mag, aftermarket 35rd feeds much more reliable costs about $450 and is easily twice the gun as the 10\22. I have magpul's angled fore grip and a laser on mine.

I have owned both.

here are my takes on the pros and cons of both

10/22
pro:
great aftermarket support (you can do anything with them)
good inexpensive mags of virtually any capacity

cons:
price
becoming more plastic and less quality as time marches on
Thick waist Garand style stock (not my thing in a rifle)

795
Pros:
price about 1/2 a 10/22
accuracy (subjective I am sure)
Thinner stock profile (personal choice I don't like Garand style thick waist stocks

Cons
Mags factory are the only ones that don't suck
need quality scope rings

My personal 22 game getter is the 795 I love the 10/22 but the 795 gets it done for half the cost..... I do not need to mod the shit out of and have a bazillion round 22 that would make mall ninjas get stiff at the sight of my 22 rifle. I just want a simple 22 that goes bang and hits what I want. and the 795 does that for the $99 bucks I paid at Cabellas

Hey man I found some 25 round mags for the 795 at MidwayUSA.com. They work great!
