" illegally manufactured and sold"

I'm going to guess it involved an 80% or some other sort of homebuilt lower with no serial #. You can home build all you want for personal use, but you can't sell the resulting firearms. And you can't manufacture any guns for sale without an 07 FFL. And anything you do manufacture and sell has to have a serial #. Thus the illegal sale also makes the manufacture illegal

We can infer that the seller did NOT have an FFL, otherwise he would have been required to do a NICS check when he sold the gun, which would have shown the shooter to be a prohibited person.

Assuming that the lower was a home build of some sort (to include an 80%), and thus had never gone through an FFL, I'd be interested in how they figured out where it came from. I'd guess through text messages, emails, phone records, or some combination of the three.

If the above is indeed the case, I would expect the antis to be pushing hard on universal background checks, and probably for background checks on non-serial # AR parts and banning of 80% lower kits.
I hold an FFL01. You are exactly correct. I wonder what will happen when the public finds out about home built firearms? Not good.

They already did with the 3D Printed Gun Menace that dominated news headlines awhile back. This will just set that pot to boiling on the stove again.

Forbes - Feds Demand Apple And Google Hand Over Names Of 10,000+ Users Of A Gun Scope App

According to an application for a court order filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) on September 5, investigators want information on users of Obsidian 4, a tool used to control rifle scopes made by night-vision specialist American Technologies Network Corp. The app allows gun owners to get a live stream, take video and calibrate their gun scope from an Android or iPhone device. According to the Google Play page for Obsidian 4, it has more than 10,000 downloads. Apple doesn’t provide download numbers, so it’s unclear how many iPhone owners could be swept up in this latest government data grab...

...The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) department is seeking information as part of a broad investigation into possible breaches of weapons export regulations. It’s looking into illegal exports of ATN’s scope, though the company itself isn’t under investigation, according to the order. As part of that, investigators are looking for a quick way to find out where the app is in use, as that will likely indicate where the hardware has been shipped. ICE has repeatedly intercepted illegal shipments of the scope, which is controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR), according to the government court filing. They included shipments to Canada, the Netherlands and Hong Kong where the necessary licenses hadn’t been obtained.

Hong Kong? Very interesting.

I make it a point not to download any apps. Just one of the reasons it is hard to make apps targeting the Prepper community.

I've heard of ATN. How widely are their scopes available?

Guns.com - Army Greenlights 3 Contractors for Next Generation Squad Weapons

Three defense contractors, including teams involving Heckler & Koch and Sig Sauer, have been picked by the U.S. Army to submit prototype new 6.8mm firearms.

The award, issued August 29, covers two distinct types of firearm: the Next Generation Squad Weapon-Rifle, a replacement for the M4/M4A1 carbine; and the Next Generation Squad Weapon-Automatic Rifle, which would take the place currently held by the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. Both would be in an updated 6.8mm chambering that would be up to the manufacturer to develop with ammunition industry partners.
I remember when I was in middle school, right at the beginning of the Iraq war, when there was talk of the 6.8spc and 50 beowulf on shows like Future Weapons and others. And that fancy mini grenade launcher. And that's when we were supposed to go to the XM8 by HK. Clearly that all happened.

It'll be interesting to see how it all turns out. Heck, I'm surprised they did go to a new sidearm with the SIG 320/m17.

A big part of why the XM8 died was that the Army tried to get cute and sidestep the bid solicitation process for a new rifle/carbine. HK got the R&D cntract for the OICW. What became the XM8 was originally the carbine part of that whole system, which the Army had HK develop separately when it became clear that the whole thing would be too bulky, and that the GL part would take a lot longer to develop.

When the Army tried to buy the XM8 as a new rifle/carbine, FN (and probably Colt and others) called foul, because the Army hadn't gone through the proper procedures for that. (There were also rumors that the Rangers had been given some XM8s to torture tests, and the guns hadn't done well. At all.)

So the XM8 went away. The grenade launcher part underwent field trials, in limited numbers, in Afghanistan as the XM25, but has since faded away.

I would love to find a Glock with one of those levers. I believe that is a G18 fire selector?

Maybe adding that extra zero and calling it "Legend" will finally make a rifle cartridge in .35 caliber popular. All the rest have done poorly.

Since 350 legend is basically a 9mm extra long, and 450 Bushmaster is a 45 extra long, we need to straight wall the 6.8 SPC case and make a 40/10mm extra long to keep the caliber wars going.

You can't just waltz in here with a little "I shot the wheelie" and leave it at that! That stuff don't fly here brother!

QFT.

I got a 4" Tuarus 65. NIB. $299.00 + S, H, & FFL. I just fired off some .38 spl. I need to get a holster. The snubbie is a Charter Arms Mag Pug. A lot of flip for some .38. I have some .357, but for the Pug. Oh, no.

I was good to get out.
