Hey, I'm Terrey Thompson. I just joined this forum to learn more about gun safety and what kind of firearms I should consider buying.

What do you need the gun(s) to do?

Follow the four rules.

Buy an AR, a bolt action .308 rifle and a small 9mm automatic. You can get a pump action shotgun too if you really want one.

That should cover everything.

I didn't know that was a rule. Glad I followed it when I started buying guns! HAHA. However I will add into that rule, ar/bolt 308/9mm pistol/10/22 take down

Well safety is pretty easy.
Always assume the gun is loaded
As we always act as if the gun is loaded don't point it at anything or anyone you don't want to destroy
Know what's downrange of where you are firing
Make sure you stay aware of your surroundings including people and things
Always wear eye and ear protection
Always use proper muzzle discipline, if you are not aiming the gun at something you want to destroy (and as always we act as if the gun is loaded) it can point straight up in the air, straight down at the floor, or towards the target and only these directions.
Make pains to not mix different calibers together in the same area, yes it's a pain but worth it
If you are unsure what to do in a situation just ask someone, preferably someone who seems competent
If you feel a situation is unsafe then listen to that feeling
Have fun :D

Well FFS! I bought a 9mm, a .45 and a bolt action .22 WMR. I guess I'll have to convince the wife I need to do more gun shopping...

Yes, Terrey, these four rules were given to Moses on Mt. Sinai as an appendix to the Ten Commandments. However, on the way back down the mountain Moses had to draw his Glock to deal with a raging lion (some ancient texts insist Moses drew a Sig 226 instead) and he dropped the Four Rules tablet, shattering it beyond repair. But he dutifully imparted the Four Rules to the Israelites, and they've been passed down ever since.

Phuleeease!

No true Israelite would be caught dead with a Glock or a Sig. A true Israelite like Moses would use an IMI built Desert Eagle and carry a Tavor TAR-21 as a long gun!

Stop filling the newbie's head with such false nonsense.

We do love to kid around but I want to expand on what 00dlez asked.

Do you have any prior experience with firearms?
Have you taken any courses on firearms handling?
Why do you want firearms?
What is your budget?

When some of the folks have posted a list of "mandatory" purchases the weapons sort of fall into rough categories:

Pistol - close in defense and a backup to a rifle or shotgun
Shotgun - next layer of close in defense
Semi-auto rifle in .223/5.56mm- provides rapid fire in a lightweight package
Bolt action with a scope in .308 or similar - provides for long range engagements and hunting of game

.22 caliber semi-auto or bolt action rifles are mentioned often for hunting small game and the weapons and ammo can be inexpensive.

Well this welcome thread escalated quickly....

Don't forget to get an airsoft clone and a shot timer.

Or you can get a zombie smoosher and a selfie stick.

Talk about nonsense. Moses lived a long time ago, Waaaaaaaaaaaaay before Tavors, He carried a Galil.

Moses gave the law to the Jewish people. That absolutely includes giving them the Galil as the Kalashnikov was handed down by God, first to Kalashnikov, that the Russians could receive and repent of the Mosin Nagant, then to the world, that all could receive the goodness. Moses was a cool guy.

To the Original Poster, I'll repeat what some said above: if you are familiar with guns, then good. If not, get some competent training before getting into the world of guns. And what you want a gun for will help decide what gun is best.

Some thoughts:

Rifle: Very accurate and allows you to shoot a good distance. Some are set up for precision shooting. Some are for fast shooting. Some can do both, but they are usually more expensive. A good precision shooter can be had for $300-$400, but the extra gear needed will run $100-$300. A fast shooter can be had for $400-$600, and extra gear will likely cost $100. Something that can do both will cost upwards of $1500+ with gear an extra $300+.

Shotgun: Typically the least expensive. It can be hard to shoot, and range is limited. Because they usually (but not always) shoot a spread of bullets (called "shot") they are often used to shoot fast moving targets like birds. Due to limited range and the limited number of bullets they can carry (called "shells") they are also often used in places where the taking of game animals needs to be limited. Shotguns are often one of the most powerful guns one can own, and paradoxically are also one of the easiest to own around the world. Typical cost: $100-$400.

Pistols: The least powerful of guns and the most portable. People like them for hunting or for defense. Range is very limited. Because of their portability people really like them for defense, despite the fact they are the least capable. Typical Cost: $300-$600.

If hunting, there can be big restrictions on what gun you can use. If living outside the US, there can still be big restrictions on what gun you can buy and own.
