Choose wisely What mouse caliber will you bet your life on

Post by The Twizzler » Wed Dec 16, 2015 7:32 pm

Things have been a little slow on the forum lately so I thought. What about a poll
So here is the situation: You slept in late on a Saturday wake up and there is utter chaos. Maybe it's a war, aliens, maybe the Beatles and Elvis are alive and putting on a concert together one time only in your little hamlet. It doesn't matter. There is chaos and you don't know why. You do know the crowds are angry and violent. For some reason the only firearm available to you is a handgun with both less power than 9 mm or 38 and of a smaller size. So what is your choice and why?

I selected the Nagant because it's a respectable round.

However, in the '30s my great aunt killed a drunk breaking into her Florida bungalow by shooting through the door with a S&W .32 Long revolver. I have that revolver and invoking God, Country, and Great Aunt Lucille I would put the undead Beatles and Elvis back where they belong.

4 Beatles + 1 Elvis.....I won't even have to reload.

LOL, ok, I'll play. I chose 22LR, only for the reason that I have more experience with it than any of the other choices. 22 will certainly kill, it may take a week or two for sepsis to set in, but it will kill.

And I would rather not get shot with any of them, to be honest. Heck, we all know BB's could shoot your eye out!

I voted .32 ACP. With FMJ it will penetrate over 12" in ballistic gel. A few companies have made .32 ACP pistols with decent capacity over the years. There is a 12+1 version of the Beretta Cheetah.

Are we limiting this to handguns, or are rifles an option?

I think the weapon would be as important. A Beretta 25 would have me opting for .25 acp. I have owned one for years

A Colt Woodsman with a 6 inch barrel would have me reaching for it. I have owned one for years

A Walther PP would have me opting for the .32 acp. I have owned one for years

A Ruger Charger with a few 30 round magazines and I would gladly chose it. I have owned several Ruger 10/22 and really like them.

I don't know about handguns, but after messing around with a Savage A17 and 20gr .17HMR fmjs I would have no problem grabbing that for a zombie apocalypse. Really impressed me.

I chose .32 acp, it's as close as you can get to my mouse gun in 9mm Makarov. 32 can get the job done.

What happened to the .380? Barring that, and talking out my rear, I'm going with the heaviest handgun specific projectile: The 7.62x38 Nagant.

I'm going 22lr because I have a SR22 that I have found to be exceptionally reliable with QUALITY ammunition, which is the only kind I keep stocked in a good amount. Aguila Super Extra is very reliable and provides adequate penetration. Not to mention fast follow up shots with a 10+1 capacity make for a decent option.
It's not a 9mm, but hey, it's what I have.

I'd have to go with a .32acp, out of a respectable platform, shooting solids.

I picked .22lr cause it is the only caliber that I have pistols with more than one mag, or a crazy heavy trigger pull (looking at you Nagant). if I am that limited, I am going to want extra mags.

I love .32. My little 1903 Colt and Ruby pistols are good little shooters. Too bad .32 ammo is expensive for what it is.

I need to grab one of those KelTec P32s since it's smaller than a pair of nail clippers....

.22 out of what I currently own, .32 if I have to choose just one. PPK, Colts and Brownings, Sauer & Sohn, etc. .380 if I get to pick one not on the list. For no good reason, I think I'd like to see Glock import the G25 and G28.

I feel like 'less than 9mm' means 9x19.. shouldn't that leave 9x18 on the table? The Mak is always a good choice...

Out of the choices listed the old .32ACP/7.65 Browning can still produce some decent numbers
with modern projectiles and loaded maximum SAAMI pressures.
