Anyone have word on the new Magpul D-60 Drum Magazines?

Post by Merovech » Wed Nov 11, 2015 12:48 pm

Quick and easy question, I did a search (google and this board) and came up empty.

Does anyone know when the Magpul D-60 Drum Magazines are set to be released? Everything I see has them 'Delayed' or 'Behind Schedule'.

Quick google search didn't turn up anything.

How much shorter is it than a standard 30 round magazine?

They are actually pretty small, given what they are.

how much? if it's cheaper than a betamag, and magpul quality, then I want one.

Somewhat off topic, what's the word on the sure fire high cap mags? Drum mag seems more intricate, where's the advantage?

Comparable price to surefire quad stack 60s, larger and bulkier. I see no reason to get one of these instead of a Surefire.

I don't know very much about either, but from my little bit of searching the biggest advantage is that the Magpul D60 is a shorter than a standard 30-round magazine while the Surefire MAG5-60 is a little longer than a standard 30-round magazine. I haven't seen any dimensions on the Magpul yet, so I don't know how much shorter it actually is.

As far as complexity goes, the Surefire has three springs and two followers, so it's more complicated than a standard AR mag. I haven't seen a diagram of the internals of the Magpul yet, but there's a good chance it has more going on than the Surefire. I have no idea how reliable they actually are, I haven't read any thorough reviews.

I haven't seen a weight listed for the Magpul. IIRC the Surefire is about the same weight as two normal AR mags. It seems like the Magpul would be heavier, but that's just an assumption on my part based on nothing but how squat it looks.

It seems like loading either without some sort of tool would be a pain. One nice thing about the Magpul is that it has a loading lever built in.

EDIT: One big advantage of the surefire would be that it fits in a normal double mag pouch.

Neither one is on my short list of things to buy. I can see how it would be nice to have one or two, but I just wouldn't want to spend the money on them.

Unpopular opinion*: Magpul has jumped the shark this year.

The amount of press they're putting out to show off gloves and drum mags has me questioning what they're trying to achieve. They've always had that mall ninja feel about plastic tacticool parts, but those parts often proved to be durable and/or effective, so I can get behind that. But what does the drum mag do that other, previously mentioned, high cap mags don't?

I think the shotgun/700 stocks are ugly as sin, but I'd buy a 700 just to get to use the pmags.

So I have a theory, but it's based entirely on speculation and I have no evidence to back it up.

The Marines are switching out some of their M249 LMGs for M27 Infantry Automatic Rifles (basically a HK416 variant). Right now these are using standard 30 round magazines.

Magpul might be trying to make a magazine that fits in well with the lighter/handier philosophy of the M27 that they would hope to sell to the Marines, but even if they don't there is probably enough civilian interest that it won't be a total failure for them.

Wow,.. that magpul drum is expensive. I'd rather dump that money into more mag and mag pouches. But,.. I need more mags and mag pouches anyway.
