A Request From a Lazy Friend

Post by raptor » Thu Jan 29, 2015 4:21 pm

I seem to have a bunch of lazy friends or they have poor search foo...anyway their laziness is rubbing off on me so I thought I would pose the question to the ZS hive mind.

A friend is retiring a S&W 3900 (DA/SA bobbed hammer) in 9mm and is looking for a more modern preferable a "plastic" frame 9mm with similar properties (i.e. DA/SA external bobbed hammer or a fully enclosed hammer with an external safety) and wants to know what he should go see. I wanted to tell him ...I am F'ing busy and go look in a gun store :P .... instead I told let me think about it  . He is not too price sensitive. He uses it for CCW about once a year and just likes to say he CCWs. The reason for the retirements is he wants a new firearm and no other reason. He just wants a newer version of what he has now.

BTW The DA/SA restrike ability is a must.

So anyone want to help me point him in the right direction?

IIRC, some of the HK USPs can be had in DA/SA with a bobbed hammer.

HK USP compact, off the top of my head. I -think- there are some CZs that fit the bill, but I can
T tell a P07 from a 75, so I could be wrong. IIRC the Taurus 24/7 line, though I wouldn't recommend them.
Opinions subject to change in light of new information.

Plastic... in SA/DA... with a bobbed hammer.... in 9mm... that's kinda tough

Baby Eagle: Hammer is basically bobbed as it is uselessly small and comes in 9mm and plastic (slick shooters, btw)
Bersa Thunder: oops, .380 and metal
S&W: he has it
HK: they already said it
Taurus: not really bobbed, but similar to baby eagle with a baby hammer

Wildcards: SIG and CZ have huge custom stuff... I'm 99.9% sure he can buy a new hammer. I've also seen them done on EAA Witness/Tangfolio lines

Wildcard's wildcard: Something like a SIG 250 or Walther PPX that is a DAO kinda gun since his criteria is unicorn-like
They see me trollin', they hatin'.... keyboardin' tryna catch me typin' dirty

recomend a FN FNX tactical, and some custom gun smithing to bob the hammer.
once he sees the price, he might do some of his own reserch.

Hm, not easy. The FN FNP fits all the criteria except the hardest one, bobbed hammer, and this guy did a pretty decent home chop job and bobbed the hammer on his.

Might also want to suggest the SIG SP2022. Not truly a bobbed hammer, but it's pretty low profile and it hits the rest of the qualifications perfectly, if you can find the manual safety version. Plus, very inexpensive and a surprisingly good pistol.

I think maybe some variant of the HK P2000 meets all of those qualifications? Maybe not the external safety.

My bet, he's going to have to go with a small amount of custom work. A FN FNP 9mm (random sale link: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =464948739) and some dremel action.

Thanks Gang! I passed along all your suggestions to him. They were great.

IMO the HK and Sig exactly fits bill from the factory, but it is his choice.

BTW I also told him if he likes the S&W he has just sent it out to be duracoated and tell everyone it is a new firearm.

Just tell him to buy a Glock and forget about all that other stuff.
Anyone wanting to talk sh*t about my guns needs to remember I'm holding a gun.

I would say maybe check out that... is it Lionheart? But it isn't polymer.
