Seeing how the phone making the call is normally fished out of Spinosaurus dung I would suspect the location is an Island under the management of InGen. The very place you shouldn't go.

For purely blockbuster-movie purposes:
-Carl Gustov
Counts as a long gun, right? I mean it's technically called a "rifle". For general "See that dino? Yeah, fuck her and everything behind her" purposes.

-Bespoke 20mm "Snipuh Rahful"
Pintle mounted on the rollbar of a Jeep, for long range herd culling. DU rounds, or similar snazziness. Must be dismounted and shoulder-fired at least once in the film though.

-AAC Honey Badger
General mid-small dino pacification. Bonus points for a Travis Haley cameo, dynamically operating against raptors, while stating "It's a damn turkey shoot!".

-"Shiny" 1911 in .460 Rowland
If the ranger is "former military badass" type.

-Winchester 1892 Mares Leg in .45-70
If the ranger is "good ole' boy" type.

-Salient Arms Glock 17
If the ranger is Travis Haley.

Well sure, in hindsight that seems obvious...

I would like to edit my original choices:

Long Guns:
1. Wetherby Mk V in .460 WBY MAG (for big carnivores)
2. AK47 SBR and side folder(maximum mobility...for smaller, faster predators)
3. Mossberg 590 12 gauge (for sprayin' n prayin')

Sidearms:
1. Glock 20 10mm (15 rounds of bliss)
2. Smith and Wesson .500 (just in case)
3. Springfield XDm .45 rechambered in .460 Rowland (just for fun)

I personally would want:

Rifle/shotgun: Marlin lever action in 45/70 or a semi auto 12 gauge with a folding stock. Basically something not too heavy to carry on patrol but powerful enough to slow something chasing me down.

Pistol: Glock 21 or a Super Redhawk. A few rounds of .45 might make a raptor take his claws out of my stomach.

I don’t doubt that the Jurassic and other “mega” animal time periods would be much different than now; behavior-wise. Some of our most dangerous large animals are herbivores and the larger the predator, often the small the population.

Outside of some of the larger, less common predators, I think there would be a larger population of the smaller, fast moving predators. As a nice, tasty little piece of white-meat on two feet, I would expect homo-sapiens to have more threats from larger predatory winged animals and the smaller predatory pack animals with a few ambush types thrown in.

Outside of the pissed off and charging triceratops, I actually think the shotgun and small-caliber, high capacity rifles would be better suited to most threats.

My preferences:
Barrett M82 – 50 cal, for long-range and obvious performance potential.
AR15 with a .223 Upper, .300 Blackout upper and a .458 SOCOM upper (it’s still one gun!)
Saiga 12 guage in an SBS form; excellent for the fast mover pack critters and a flock of predatory pterodactyls; with 12 and 20 round drums, that would very helpful...

I’ve always thought McCann’s .458 Win Garand would be sublime for a Jurassic visit. It would be a much more mobile dino-gun than the Barrett…

Handguns are good backups for the smaller critter that could attack you in a pack and tear you into small dinner pieces. I would still value high capacity for the most part:

AK Pistol…hard to argue punch and capacity despite the package size!
Glock 20 in 10mm and several 15+5 mags
Glock 29 in 10mm (something to have at all times and get you to your rifle)

Ok just watched JP III again. I changed my mind about 5.56mm. Forget anything less than 7.62mm for the veloraptors.

I'd say the movie raptors were probably pushing 200-250lbs+. I'd equate them in size and ferocity to a big cat. Somewhere between a large jaguar and a small lion. I'd much prefer a something starting in a .30 caliber as well.

Velociraptors, or Utahraptors?

I think the movie raptors were somewhere between Deinonychus and Utahraptor. They pretty much just wanted then on scale with the actors.

I also remember reading somewhere that the Utahraptor was unearthered right about the time the movie was in production so it really worked out well with the marketing people that the "raptor" that they portrayed actually existed... even if it wasn't the anachronistic "velociraptor"

They were Hollywood Velociraptors which means they are fictional. Since this thread is about the movie that is what I am basing my commentary upon. They were aggressive, fast, smart, cooperative and hunted as a pack using big claws and a mouth full of teeth. The real ones ....well who knows.

So if I had to face JP Velociraptors I would want nothing less than 7.62mm in a self loader, preferably with a drum magazine and a giggle switch. It could be x39mm, x51mm or x54r just so long as it has at least 7.62mm in front.

x31 or 35 or whatever, pushing 220s subsonic through a can, so you're not attracting another horde or pack while exterminating the group in front of you. 50rd drum and giggle switch.:D

Interesting point what kind of bullet? Bearing in mind this is fantasy and therefore you can request an ideal (as opposed what you have on hand).

I am thinking a Barnes TTSX or a Hornady SST or TAP for the velociraptors.

Lets not forget the Dilophosaurus. The one in the movie was small, supposedly a juvenile. But the adults got as big or bigger than the raptors portrayed.

I think we need to throw a list of all the dinosaurs on either island we would have to deal with. And use that to plan which weapons would be most likely needed and effective.

I'll do it in a bit if someone doesn't beat me to it first.

Anyone read the books? There were some crazy dinos in the second one especially. Carnotaurus, pachycephalosaurus, raptors, and T-rex. Even the smallest would need at least a .30 cal slug, just like modern big game. I think the 5.56mm is a varmint round....

HK21E with AP ammo, a burst or two should do the trick for the big stuff.
Steyr Aug - I'd prefer the HK G3 but the lighter more compact bullpup could be handy when their running for their lives through the scrub.
AA-12 - portable destruction

Sti Perfect 10 10mm - longer barrel/sight radius and large magazine capacity.
S&W .460 - kinda want more than 5 rounds though, maybe if the dino is standing still...
Glock 18 - Last ditch measure, who knows they might get lucky

Does anyone else here think that shooting compies would be easy with a Judge? In the books, the compies were all over the island, in every enclosure. That was because they were the waste management plan for the island, they ate all the other dino's poop. They also were one of the first dino's to escape and start attacking children.

Seems to me like they would be practically a nuisance animal for the most part.

Great Jehosephat!!!! I can not belive I didn't suggest one of these earlier-
A Flame Thrower

I can not think of a single dino that wouldn't turn tail and run like hell when hit with a stream of flaming napalm. It's an island over run by dinosaurs, the fire can't spread off the island amd frankly even if the vegetation was completely removed it would be an acceptible loss.

Kill them. Kill them with FIRE!

That was actually one of my initial thoughts when this thread started. " Those little compy bastards might actually be a justification for carrying a Judge." Then I came to my senses and remembered that there is no justification for carrying a judge. Ever.

Wasn't mentioned before because fire is for spiders.

Can't be wasting all your napalm and flammable stuff on dinosaurs just to have have a spider crawl across your bathroom floor and sit on your foot.

Spiders got no reason to live.

30 cal. huh? Oh! Oh! An untraceable Ghost Gun that fires thirty caliber magazine clips per half second with a shoulder thing that goes up, and an evil pistol grip and flash hider! That'll get'em!

This is a tangent, but:

Does anyone know of a machine gun shoot or other venue where one can shoot a flamethrower? They used to have them at Knob Creek but haven't for the last few years, since 2010 or so. Anyone know if they have em at Big Sandy or Dragon man or anywhere else?
