Download Wikipedia for offline use: XOWA

Post by raistlin » Fri Sep 05, 2014 11:50 pm

XOWA lets you download a copy of Wikipedia for use offline. I just tried the simple version (it's an abbreviated version of 180,000 pages), and it works great.

http://xowa.sourceforge.net/

Apparently, the full version takes about 100GB of storage. Could be really useful to have for medical information alone in an SHTF situation where the Internet is no longer available, and then consider all of the other topics that are covered. For anyone who has the solar grid to support a lot of computer use, put the kids to work learning about different topics :)

Nice! Very cool. Thanks for posting this. I have been wondering if something like this existed.

Wow that's awesome!

And SanDisk just came out with the first 128GB micro SD last year. If XOWA would make an Android version (and they might now that there is storage to support it), it would be worth it as an advanced prep just to get a cheap tablet as a low energy usage advice to run it on. Or better yet, in a prolonged SHTF situation where a smartphone would become fairly useless, use the phone to access your local copy of Wikipedia.

For when the grid does down...

A COMPLETE Wiki and a few other downloads with say an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (battery lasts forever) a USB stick or two, and a USB solar charger and you are sorted.

This is awesome. I'm going to see if I can get a large enough SD card and open this bad boy up on my tablet. Just go in every so often and get a new version I suppose.

Unless you have a Windows tablet that will run the software, I think you have to have their software running to access the wiki. Last I looked, they did not have an Android version. Not sure about iOS.

Yeah. It would be nice to have a Windows tablet for this reason. Maybe one day (I have Android) :)

Let us know how well it works and which tablet you are using. Maybe it's worthwhile to get that same model in a year or two when they go down in price. I think it's definitely worth paying a little money to have Wikipedia on a tablet :)

As an update, xowa now appears to have an android interface.

If you follow the link in the original post you will be redirected (the site has moved) to here :-

http://gnosygnu.github.io/xowa/

Follow the link under "Recent News" for "2016-01-17 Android app beta released"

I've not tried it because my version of android is too old, but I do like the idea of offline wikipedia on a tablet.

Looking further into this, the site below appears interesting with regards to offline information.

Anyone have any experience?

This is pretty neat. I can't check right now but I'm wondering if there is a way to sort by category. I remember reading before that like 90% of Wikipedia articles are about arts/culture, biographies, histories and events. While these can be very interesting I'm not sure a lot of that is very useful in a PAW. The small percentage that is health and science could be very handy though. Then again you know what they say about failing to learn from history's mistakes...

Enduring source of knowledge for after the fact?

Historical research for combat tactics?

I can think of quite a few things that would make it valuable. Awesome post, OP.

Very nice! Thanks! I did however only find the 564GB download. I am not sure where the 128GB version is though.
