I'm currently battling a scourge...

Post by gronch » Sat Jul 25, 2009 10:07 am

Just joined your awesome forum. I'll wait patiently for the free stuff in the mail... :-)

While doing research on how to make my BOB better, I stumbled across posts from woods walker, and realized that there was another level of preparedness -- actually trying things out. Never thought of that before.

I read a huricane Katrina "I was there" post from raptor and all of a sudden felt pretty sober and uneasy. Never thought of a lot of things. There's not a lot of information on the wilderness survival sites about certain things.

Since this is an introduction, I like long walks on the beach, cheesecake, and solving problems. I had to look up dropbear after reading something here.

This morning, I am dealing with a bunch of pissed off ants. I cut off their entry point (overgrown vine made contact with the house). As I'm typing this, an ant will literally walk across my laptop screen every so often. It doesn't end well for them. I hate ants more than zombies, and since I have trapped them inside the perimeter, I will just have to deal with it.

Okay I'll shut up now.
Awesome-sauce.

gronch,

I'm fresh blood, but I'm into completely natural (read:PAW-proof) solutions in a big way.
I can definately solve your ant problem, without any chemicals or man made products at all.

Go buy yourself some cornmeal.

Take note of the ant's paths and general areas of entry.

Sprinkle a generous amount of your cornmeal around.
(We're talking less than half a handful per nest. 'Generous' is not measured in pounds. Sorry, funny mental picture.)

Every avaliable ant will swarm the cornmeal, and carry grain after grain back to thier mound.
(Seriously. I've seen a kilo and a half of oatmeal disappear like this in the tropical humidity of the summers here.)

Ants digest cornmeal.

Said ants find cornmeal is indigestible for ants.

Ants get stomach aches.

Ants die.

Just a word of warning, do not use this solution for ants nests inside the house. Ants bodies are small, numerous, and suprisingly resistant to vaccuuming.

If you're an ant-pacifist, straight white vinegar works just as well.

The ability that ants have to mimic the paths of each other is based in scent, and the ability to follow specific scents to specific locations.
Vinegar, as well as garlic, coffee, capsicum, ginger, cinnamon, and almost any strong aromatic herb you can think of, interferes with the ants reception and processing of this scent.

The stronger the smell, the better it works, the less you need, and the longer it lasts.
A good indication of how effective a plant, vegetable or herb might be is it's PH level.

In my opinion, if you're not going to use cornmeal, use vinegar. Reapply every three days or so.

To be a really twisted individual, spray undiluted vinegar on the opening of the nest.
Ant's trail any substance they become contaminated with.

Suddenly, no one knows where they're supposed to be going.

I hate ants.

What can I say.
I usually play life as an evil character.

Hope this helps,

Thanks -Sonnenkinder ! I had never heard of that before. I've always had the "inside is mine, you stay outside" philosophy for ants, but there are times of the year where they'll build bridges over the poison barrier and still make ingress. Once they built a mud tunnel to keep protected from the ant spray.

I wonder if they'll eat alka-seltzer or pop rocks?
Awesome-sauce.

Alka seltzer contains citric acid and baking soda.

Citric acid is weak in PH.

And ant's wont walk over an unbroken line of chalk if they can avoid it. Try it.

Chalk is calcium bicarbonate.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate.

I think we've just found a potentially new solution.

It's 0522, i'll test it at lunch time.

Welcome from the San Gabriel Valley

Ants are natural enemies to termites so I tolerate the half dozen or so species of black ants as long as they stay under or outside the house. The southern fire ants are not welcome. I find ant incursions are short lived. I use Sevin dust (carbaryl) around the points of entry. Some people have reported good results with boric acid powder but I've never used it on ants. It's hell on cockroaches though.

If you want to zap a nest, pour some gasoline in it. No need to light it, the fumes are heavier than air and will flow down into the tunnels, eventually killing the queen. If gasoline is contraindicated, try this:
  • Buy some cheap pipe tobacco
Soak it in warm water overnight
    Wear latex or vinyl gloves
    Strain out the residue
Pour the water into the nest.

Oh no, no, no, no.

These are all valid suggestions, but you must try your idea, too.

It sounds so promising.

If for no other reason than my book.

But, you must try it.

Carbaryl is great for bees, too.

Boric acid is a tad dangerous with small children, though.

Be sure not to ingest it. Either be it you, or small children.

2 grams ingested is fatal to children.

Conversely, boric acid used to be a natural remedy for diaper rash, and works well.

Just don't go snacking.

Funny facts about Carbaryl:

-Can be rapidly absorbed through the skin, unlike other pesticides.
-In large doses, can cause sterility
-Has been declared a carcinogen by the US EPA
-Has a refreshingly minty aftertaste.

No, no, it doesn't.

Don't try it.

Definately use it for bees, though. And wasps.

I advocate killing them with fire... but that might have unintended consequences to the rest of your place.

Upon re-reading my previous advice, It sounds like the ant infestation is too complete to handle by any passive natural solution.

There is one natural cure-all, though.

You're going to have to banana bomb it, man.

I'm sorry.
It's the only way.

Banana bomb: your essential, easy to carry source of Niacin, Vitamin B10, V12, Riboflavins, and door breaching, room clearing goodness, all with the delicious smell of Cordite.

Banana bomb, the way Mother Nature intended.
