Re: Mysterious shaking in SoCal

We get strange "booms" in coastal NC fairly often, and have since pre-colonial times. No-one knows why, or what causes them. I'm betting Cthulu.

Maybe the phenomena moved westward?

Re: Mexico becoming a failed state?

A report on NPR indicates that the US military is contingency planning for a complete collapse of Mexico, and the resultant spillover violence, refugees, and a possible US intervention. Bear in mind that it's their job to plan for the worst, so don't read too much into that. heh...Reminds me of a p...

Re: more predictions of civil unrest

Thank you for the link! I don't have time to go over the docs now, but I will eventually. I still have questions about the data. Specifically, and in short, who exactly is migrating and why? I seriously doubt there's anything like "population flight" out of the US right now. Movement across the bord...

I suspect he's just after what he always wants: a place at the table as a regional heavyweight. He's banking that no-one wants to rock the boat in these times, and he can bully a few more concessions out of his neighbors or the west.

Re: Mexico becoming a failed state?

This is starting to scare me. As a lot of you know, I'm an historian who studies the US/Mexico border. Civil disturbances and even state collapse/semi-collapse are a long way from unprecedented in Mexican history. Internal Mexican violence spilling over into the US has also happened in the past. Bor...

Re: RUSSIAN ANALYST PREDICTS DECLINE AND BREAKUP OF USA

There's always someone predicting the collapse of the Republic. One day, they'll be right. For now, though, I might could go along with the idea that the US is headed for trouble, but the timeline seems really short, and as several folks have already pointed it, it doesn't sound like he's really tal...

Re: more predictions of civil unrest

I'd question a couple of the article's statements, namely: A) I need to see numbers on this alleged "population flight", to Europe or anywhere else. I suspect I know what's going on, but I question the way they've presented it. B) "Firearms = bad people who riot" is a really oversimplified analysis....

Re: Mexico becoming a failed state?

I think we all know who runs the show by now.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/08599187151600 Be a little careful with that. Mexico's not quite a complete narco-state yet--though if I had to guess, I'd say it'll happen sooner rather than later. For good or ill, their government still controls the oi...

Re: Mexico becoming a failed state?

I seriously doubt we'll see a full-on "collapse" in Mexico. However, I suspect that cartelification will continue, and Mexico will start to look more and more like Colombia. There will be a semi-functional national government with increasing criminal control of the periphery, in particular the all-t...

Re: North Korea, Nuclear Arms, and the US...

Don't count out the Chinese either. The ties between NK and China are still pretty tight. Remember that it was the Chinese that were the last to come into the international group that eventually forced NK to shut down the nuke production the first time. If NK comes south, it is an even bet in my bo...

The situation grows more interesting. You can read about it here:

Re: Mexico becoming a failed state?

The whole Gulf area could become problematic. We're mostly concerned about the border states, when we talk about Mexico's problems. The Gulf states and Florida have some serious problems, too, but I think those are best considered separately as they have different causes and are taking shape in dif...
