Re: Just when you thought H1N1 was bad wait till this spreads

It's really not a big deal. We get about 25 cases a year in the US, and more in Canada and Mexico.

It's easily treatable now.

Re: People flee Chinese town hit by plague (or so they say)

There are probably people leaving, though honestly the panic was probably caused by the lockdown more than the plague.

Pneumatic plague is fairly common in the Third World--hell, we get about 25 cases a year here in the USA. It's treatable as well.

Re: H1N1 pandemic news started 06/11/2009

Normally I ignore killer flu news, but there are a couple of things going on right now that make me nervous. I've been hearing a lot--and I do mean a LOT--of chatter on the wire about the upcoming pandemic. Doctors and nurses, some of whom I know personally, are concerned about what might happen thi...

Re: Terrorists bomb two Western Hotels in Jakarta

I question how many terror groups are really active in the US, for a couple of reasons. There's plenty of terrorism that doesn't take much in the way of a budget or planning, but which would be very effective in instilling fear in a civilian population. I'm not going into details here, for obvious r...

Re: Active Domestic terror cell arrested

Apparently there were no domestic threats being presented by these guys, and all the news accounts I can find are real non-specific as to where out in "abroad" they were planning on acting.

Though the idea of the US as a refuge for terror training facilities is interesting.

The DPRK has vowed a ‘Thunderbolt of Revenge’ if Japan interferes with the missile launch.

Needless to say, none of the neighbors are real happy about that.

The problem with incidents like this in volatile regions of the world is that it simply doesn't matter what really happened.

If enough folks think "foul play", there'll be trouble.

My hometown has, for various reasons over the years, become a focal point of Korean migration to the US.

It's pretty common to hear people talk about how they're going to bring relatives over in the event of a problem on the peninsula.

Re: Mexico becoming a failed state?

The southward movement of ammunition is a time-honored tradition dating back to the Mexican Revolution, and continuing throughout the 20th century. Again, the only new thing is the scale, and I wonder how much that's actually increased. I'd also be curious to know how much cartel ammo comes from the...
