Re: Upright Canister Stoves in the Cold

I have several of the primus stoves and they're great. I have 2 of the older style multifuels (not 'ex') in my and my wife's big bob's. That stove is similar in operation to the msr xgk. I also have a pair of omnifuels which are similar to the dragonfly in that there is a fine simmering adjustment a...

Re: Upright Canister Stoves in the Cold

I approve of the hiker plus and 111t. ;) It kills me that in 1995 I bought (1) 111t from ims plus military surplus website for $25 + $4 shipping. I could have bought as many as I wanted. I have two more now but they both cost more and came in worse shape. Let that be a lesson to you about military s...

Flammable paracord?!

Adam Francis over at E2E announced a kick starter campaign in conjunction with live fire. The concept seems to be to replace the inner strands of paracord with a fiber made of the live fire type material. The idea being that you could replace all of the paracord dongally things, fobs , handle wraps ...

Re: Upright Canister Stoves in the Cold

Hello All Jet Boil's website says they are coming out with an upright canister stove for cold weather on April 1st. It's called the Joule Cooking System. BTW, the JetBoil site also has recipes for the JetBoil. http://www.jetboil.com/Products/Joule-Cooking-System/" onclick="window.open(this.href);re...

Re: Upright Canister Stoves in the Cold

I saw this Chinook Trekker Hard Anodized Stove/Cookset the other day and thought about picking one up when the funds are there. It says it's compatible with alcohol, gas and tablet fuel. Could be a good solution. Does anyone have any experience with it? Looks like the stove that 111t posted: http:/...

Re: Upright Canister Stoves in the Cold

On a side note don't use a wind screen on a canister stove. Heck my advice use body heat alone to raise the temp. Once decided to "do the right thing" and burn bags of trash careless hikers left behind. Turns out they tossed a canister into that trash guessing empty because no one tosses a full one...

The craziest thing I've ever heard... Read that: the CRAZIEST THING THAT I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU DO... At all... under any circumstances... I've read somewhere on the inter webs that some have experimented with running a piece of wire across the burner and then down around the tank a couple of times....

I've been building a service kit for some of the various camp stoves I own. http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u43/111t/Snapbucket/15F1135B_zps34adb764.jpg Today I arrived at work and several orders were waiting. 1x optimus nova service kit 1x svea123r/optimus 8r service kit 1x primus omnifuel servi...

Re: Misconceptions and myths about fire steels.

I was just getting philosophical. ;)

Did you know that George G. Blaisdell, the founder of Zippo, shut early production down but kept all the employees on payroll because he was convinced that they did not have the ideal steel alloy for the striker wheels?

Production resumed after they found it.

Re: USGI Mess Kit Or Canteen Boiler cup? Better Options?

That looks like a nice kit. I've seen them on the surplus market for several years but I've never picked any up. (They have been in the shopping cart on a couple of occasions) in my experience military cooksets are almost always worth more than they sell for as surplus. The main reason that I've nev...

Re: USGI Mess Kit Or Canteen Boiler cup? Better Options?

You can put a good usgi canteen/cup kit together for a reasonable amount of money. Canteen shop.com has a variety of different options available. I have the nalgene canteen and I like it a lot. In my opinion the heavy cover brand lid is a good addition to a usgi canteen kit. I like the msr seagull s...

Re: Bleuet Pocket Stove

I have a local store that alternates between the bluet branded ones and the Esbit. Almost as if the supplier is treating them interchangeably. They do certainly look to be comparable. That said, I've only ever actually used the esbit ones. I'll echo the previous suggestions to add a windscreen and t...

Re: What have you bought lately? (Bug Out Version)

Found a few of these cooksets on eBay. Swiss military surplus. Similar in design to the Ledmark clones I review in my sig. I ordered one or two. They come without a burner, but unlike the ledmark kits the hole in the lower windscreen is designed to hold a cup which happens to fit the Swedish militar...

Camillus cuda folding knife. I had one of the USA made ats34 ones back around 01 or 02. I've been eyeing the $30 Chinese reissue for a little while now. I'm sure that this will seem excessive to some... But as I said I edc a zippo. Several of my friends do as well. So this is more of a day to day maintenance kit rather than a shtf prep. The magic relighting candles are a brilliant mystic_1 I'm glad to pass the idea along but it isn't my idea. I prefer the trick candles, but the regular ones work too. They're not as storm proof obviously. And regarding a lighter as backup... I personally consider the matches to be the cold weather ...
