Re: Quazi's self-sufficiency projects

Our hens have been laying lots since it started getting light out. I would guess we have ~13 hens, but it's hard to keep count of them. Here's a little egg pron.

Re: Quazi's self-sufficiency projects

I haven't done anything the last couple weeks except for shovel snow. I've learned that if I do 5+ hours a day I do something to my back that makes my hands go numb, so I've been trying to avoid doing that. The snow is deep enough that we can no longer move the bulldozer through the ditch, which mea...

Re: Covid-19 Leads to Surge of Guns & Ammo Sales

I was kind of surprised by the SA trigger. I was expecting something more like a SA revolver trigger or a 1911. It's not terrible, but not good either.

Also, the sights are tiny. I could probably replace them, but I don't necessarily want to spend much on a pistol I'm probably not going to keep.

Re: Covid-19 Leads to Surge of Guns & Ammo Sales

I bought a surplus Beretta 92s because they were so inexpensive, plus I had never shot a DA/SA like that and I figured having a 9mm for inxepensive plinking would be fun. I don't really care for it though. Maybe now is the time to sell it. His experience has been interesting; he said he cannot keep ...

Re: How have your preps evolved?

Since I got on ZS the summer after I graduated from high school in some ways that both encouraged me to work on my preparedness and also kept me from going down the path of having three years of Mountain House buried on public lands out in the mountains that I would retreat to with an INCH bag (some...

Re: Covid-19 Leads to Surge of Guns & Ammo Sales

As far as handgun ammo, only thing they had plenty of was .40 and .38 special for defense loads. Fortay FTW every panic.... it has been amazingly consistent. I remember back during the 2012 panic they ran out of 10mm locally, and didn't get any more for a looooong time (I"m guessing the ammo manufa...

In related events, there's a lady I know who has lived in my town for decades with her family. They own a house here. When she and her husband both retired, they started snowbirding down to Texas for the winters. Yesterday she was on Facebook livid because someone apparently told her that she would ...

Re: Firearms Chat: Yeet Cannon 2 Electric Boogaloo

Now I don't claim to be an expert on all doubles as I only have an old Sears model. But: 1. The hammers are an extra piece to break or snag 2. They are an extra step for manual of arms 3. Slower to reload due to extra manual of arms 4. Can be less reliable due to having firing mechanism exposed The...

Re: Firearms Chat: Yeet Cannon 2 Electric Boogaloo

Good lord man! Reading this it seems at least half your problem is lack of training with the firearms on hand and that's both a prep fail and a firearms ownership fail. I don't know about your house but my house has a very hard and fast rule that every person in the household gets trained and quali...

Re: Firearms Chat: Yeet Cannon 2 Electric Boogaloo

My grandma's house is both wonderful and frustrating because it's a center of activity for so many people. It's wonderful because so many relatives and friends of the family congregate there, it's frustrating because it leads to a lot of "too many cooks in the kitchen" type stuff. A selection of rel...

Re: Firearms Chat: Yeet Cannon 2 Electric Boogaloo

I don't like hammer fired side by sides.... But that's me. Dude on Alaskaslist is selling a 20 gauge coach gun. 2 triggers and 0 hammers... The best way Why don't you like hammer fired? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'd like to know because I've never owned a SxS and only ever shot one once. The mai...

Re: Firearms Chat: Yeet Cannon 2 Electric Boogaloo

Hmmm, I don't own a label maker but I do have half a roll of labels around here somewhere. I like the electrical tape idea. It probably wouldn't stick on that great but I imagine I'd be able to peel it off and clean it pretty easily. I've only got black electrical tape but my paint pen over top of i...

Re: Firearms Chat: Yeet Cannon 2 Electric Boogaloo

Do you folks know if masking tape will corrode a blued firearm over time? I'm thinking of potentially having a "community" double barrel at my grandmother's house. We frequently have call to blast some animal there and there and bears frequently wander through. Most of my relatives have experience s...

Re: "Daily COVID-19 SITREP In Your Area"

In one town in the state there have been a few cases reported among people that have not traveled recently, which is worrying news. I went to the local health clinic for my regularly scheduled checkup. They had stopped taking walk-ins and they were testing people for fever at the door (nobody has ha...

Re: Firearms Chat: Yeet Cannon 2 Electric Boogaloo

I'm hoping this current panic buying is just a blip and it doesn't run straight through until election panic buying sets in. I mean, I've got plenty so I'm not going to be running out anytime soon, but I am a little worried that increased prices will stick around for a long time. I just noticed righ...

Re: Wuhan Coronavirus Thread

Lots of tours being cancelled. The kind that can't be rescheduled easily (cruise ships and long-term bus tours). My family's business and the entire region's income are dependent to a significant degree on tourism. We've also got rentals, but if people can't afford to pay rent due to losing their to...

Almost entirely board games. Gloomhaven, Twilight Imperium and Blood Rage primarily, but a bunch of others as well.

Re: Quazi's self-sufficiency projects

Thanks, I'm glad to be back!

Yeah, last summer was bad. Plus beetles killed nearly all the spruce trees in the area and there were big fires around the two towns south of us. I'm worried we're going to be next.

I need to drop more trees once I finish shoveling, but there's just so much to do.

Re: Quazi's self-sufficiency projects

We've been raising pigs the last couple years. Regular sized pigs at first, then potbellies when we got a really good deal on some. I like the pigs, but they can be a real PITA and we haven't had good luck when it comes to them having piglets. https://i.imgur.com/GEGnVKH.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/i3...
