Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

I think DarkAxel offers a very well-stated rationale for why preppers should use the precautionary principle to treat climate change seriously: I see little difference between reducing use in energy derived from hydrocarbons and stocking a prepper's pantry. I don't see the difference between that an...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

I am curious on your take from that science daily article I posted. Any comment? Here is an interesting article on consensus among scientists. Certainly worth a read if you have any doubts about what Climatologists are saying/thinking... http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/05/130515203048.htm...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

However, remember the hole in the ozone? How hairspray and refrigerants were going to scorch us all? Turns out the hole in the ozone was a perfectly naturally phenomenon brought on by fluctuations in the Earths magnetic field. This is completely false. Ozone depletion via man-made CFCs (and other h...

http://blog.chron.com/sciguy/2013/01/study-finds-greenlands-ice-may-not-be-as-vulnerable-to-climate-change-as-scientists-feared/ Study on ice cores/glacier melting in Greenland had this bit that caught my eye. The study used ice cores to study conditions during a period of natural global warming th...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

So, I'm not to expect a certain point 50 years in the future where the ice caps melt "Ice caps" is misused a lot. There are three main parts to the cryosphere of interest: land ice, sea ice, and ice sheets. For land ice, think alpine glaciers and really any ice that's not in the ocean or in the Gre...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

Either or both. Okay, let me dig up some papers. I am going to be mostly without internet access from this evening until Sunday night, so it may be a while. Assuptions drawn from data of past periods on how differing factors individually and combined affected the overall past climate to help create...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

I heard it said that it will become runaway warming with the planet going into a feedback loop that makes the tempurature continue to rise and that in 100 years we won't recognize the planet for how vastly it has changed with all the mass extinctions that go along with it. There are positive and ne...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

Is there a version of the last chart you posted that extends a few hundred or more years into the future? In terms of what the system would be doing in the absence of our actions or inclusive? Such a thing, if it exists, would obviously be based on assuptions drawn from past patterns Well, no. Clim...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

Didn't see this one initially. As for evasion, yes and no. Humans cannot hold the climate stable over time, period. Eh. It's a matter of degree. If we wanted to, we could hold the planetary energy balance within a certain range fairly easily through shortwave (albedo) and longwave (GHG) radiation ma...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

The problem, Ghostface, is that there is whether you recognize it or not. Off topic is off topic. It's beyond the scope of appropriate discussion for this thread, on this board. You've said before that you have trouble understanding why people reject the science of AGW. I am sure I did say that at ...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

I guess people that don't blindly accept a highly politicized and emotionally charged topic sold by folks with a lot of profit and control at stake will have to pick another word to describe why they would be distrustful of a group trying to sell something. Please stop. There's nothing "highly poli...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

I may be reading too much into your statement above, but it seems that what you said is that absent mankind and the GHG we have produced there would be no warming trend on the global climate.....is that a valid understanding of your statement? The exact answer depends on the time scale in question....

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

So what I'm watching for is bigger storm surges, longer droughts, and the hottest year since we started keeping weather records, all globally averaged. The hottest year (absent a significant low latitude volcanic cooling) is very strong bet. But it would be foolish to believe that we must necessari...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

Skeptics agreed with the Church versus Galileo and Copernicus? I am not disputing AGW, I just see this as an odd definition of skepticism. I am not making claims about what the word might have meant to different groups hundreds of years ago. I am simply discussing its modern usage in the skeptic mo...

More seriously, what effects do you forsee in the next 5 years On interannual timescales, the effect of natural variability, particularly related to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, is going to have a larger impact on metrics like global average temps, precip, tropical cyclones, etc. than greenhou...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

I completely disagree with this statement, and here's why: part of the carbon cycle consists of volcanic eruptions and you can't predict those. You can do an average over decades on how much they emit but all it takes to throw that out of whack is a VEI 8 - geologists have found 10 of those in the ...

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

Re: Global Cooling will kill us all!

Somewhat of a follow up to the previous question (also not a sarcastic dig)- In the past it had been belived that the onset of glacation was gradual, and this theory persisted for decades until further research and discoveries displaced it with the present theory thprocessestion is much more rapid,...

also someone said that the last ice age was 10,000 years ago which i think didn't take into account the mini ice age that happened from 1400-1800/1900's. Geologically speaking, we are still in an ice age, albeit an interglacial period. Maybe not for much longer, though. The following is a legit que...

First off, I just want to say thanks for being civil and respectful, Tater Raider. This is a topic that can get people riled up, and it's important to remember that we're all on the same team here. Re: Cold snap in E. Europe claims dozens of lives

Cold weather kills more people than any other weather event. Too many people are fooled by the weather, and that's a disaster. Agreed, but that seems like an usually high death/frostbite toll for regions which (I think?) do get such temperatures most years? Is there something else, like the dire ec...

I recently received one of these as a gift recently. I like it a great deal, especially since I've long since gone over to the "crack" lighters from Bics and Zippos.
