Re: Guy in the middle of nowhere loses his BOV to fire?!!!

It was a huge prep fail for me because I never stopped to consider how to open that hatch without power. Since then we've kept the booster pack in the seatback pocket of the passenger seat but that doesn't really solve the problem of accessing things in the back of the vehicle since letting the bat...

Great input and ideas, both of you! Thank you.

And NT2C, I stole a lot of my good ideas above from you ;)

Re: Guy in the middle of nowhere loses his BOV to fire?!!!

Yeah, all the gear and preps we have in the vehicle are in a spot you cannot get to if there's no power. Ooopsie! I'm still not sure what to do about that. That problem (needing power to open anything) is actually pretty common in cars today. In a few cars getting locked in is possible. https://mcg...

One of the reasons I go camping is to invite a little disaster and chaos into my life to learn from it.

This is entirely too much diaster.

Thank you for sharing.

Re: Mossberg 500 based home defense setup

As I'm thinking it through, I wonder if the ban states have created a bigger market for shotguns. Otherwise, l don't know why the 590 series would be any hotter now than, say, 5 years ago.

Re: ALX-SSB low power, low cost radio set

How would people here set this radio up for emcomms? To be cost and weight efficient, I"m thinking mono-band, half-wave dipole, coax and battery. If monobanding, I don't think a tuner would be needed if a resonant antenna was used. I"m thinking 40m is on the high end of the NVIS capable frequencies....

https://c.shld.net/rpx/i/s/i/spin/10079817/prod_19504802012?hei=416&wid=416&op_sharpen=1 Apart from it being occasionally on sale at 11.99 apiece, what's wrong with this? The key issue is quality control. The areas I'm most familiar with poor QC are in the fitting of the ax head to the shaft and th...

Re: Ammo can or Ammo Brick?

I read an experience of a man who is a prepper and went through a flood. Most of his ammo was destroyed. Over 9,000 rounds. After that I decided I need cans with lids which lock tight, will not pop open accidentally, and eventually I need to buy battle packs with ammo in sealed bags I can then put i...

Re: ALX-SSB low power, low cost radio set

Well that will give me something to do in my (non-existent) spare time :awesome:

I'll have to power through that general! The cost of most HF rigs was keeping the General on the back burner. This makes it doable.

Re: ALX-SSB low power, low cost radio set

Mine too.

A tech can only use CW on some of the higher bands. Any recommendations on a keyer & tone maker?

And yes, I just need to get the general. But it would be cool to have something to play with while getting there ;)

I used to play with an electric Spyder with an electric hopper. Had a lot of fun doing it. My electro-pneumatic markers are almost antiques: an '01 Angel LCD, '02 Matrix LED and '03 Shocker SFT. So far I've been able to keep them running with spare parts, circuit boards, and solenoids scrounged off...

Re: Mossberg 500 based home defense setup

The Mossberg 500 does come with swivels that work very well, so I plan to use those along with a quick adjust sling. You're gonna want to mount the sling on the side at the front, and on the side or top of the stock at the back.... http://i1012.photobucket.com/albums/af242/boomslang45/870_001.jpg h...

Yeah, we are pretty preparedness focused. You have lurked, so you know we like zombies, but we also like to prepare for hurricanes, job loss, economic disasters, fires, roadside issues...all the things.

Re: Mossberg 500 based home defense setup

I've looked at the various "saddle" options for the gun, both with and without loops for extra rounds but haven't made up my mind yet if I want to try one. My main concern with them is that they all have at least one or two reviews complaining about knuckles getting rubbed raw by the extra edges ad...

Re: Mossberg 500 based home defense setup

One option for on-board ammo is a soft shell holder with Velcro attachment on the receiver. Warning: if you go cheap, a few rounds of full recoil will throw them out of the side carrier. Spend the extra $4 to $15 and get quality. And you will not have knuckle issues. But I plan to get a hard shell c...

Re: Mossberg 500 based home defense setup

A light, a XS Big Dot, a side saddle, and a sling are all I really feel are necessary. Other stuff is cool to have though, so I'm interested in what others say and I am glad for the review of your experiences with your prior shotgun. I am cautious about folding stocks or pistol grips, but I know som...

Sigh...ye old Minimag.... I have an Automag, bolted into an M1 Carbine stock. It is fun. I have not shot that in probably 10 years. I got that one back in '94. It was my first "good" marker. Used it for many a 5-man woodsball tourney, 24 hour scenario game and tons of regular recball, until I got m...
