Re: Pistols as primary

I don't have any experience with 30-30, but looking at paper, you could do a helluva lot worse! Especially with the Hornady stuff. It's a thumper for sure.

Saw a demonstration of the Liberator. The shooter could not hit a silhouette at 10'.
Accurate, it was not...but that's not what it was designed for. I posted it, mostly because of its intended purpose...to acquire a better weapon - but that's not very CoC compliant

Re: Mossberg 500 based home defense setup

Now you've got me thinking I should have picked up that case of Federal Flite Control 00 instead of the S&B 00 that I did buy. Still, the S&B gives reasonably good results at the ranges I'm likely to be shooting it (0-25yds). Spread is about 3' at 25yds and that's not all that horrible for home def...

I'd consider a Ruger Blackhawk convertible in .357/.38/9mm
That would be a great choice!

Re: Mossberg 500 based home defense setup

Agreed...it would not be for a novice. 410 is nothing to sneeze at though. We've taken a few foxes with our ancient 410. 2 of them were at 35 yards or more. I know the one I clocked was at 45 yards. 000 Buck 3" shell. Still almost no recoil. Lookedlike someone clocked that fox over the head with a s...

Re: Mossberg 500 based home defense setup

I second this! Thanks for this information. I'm currently using Remington 00 Buck, which I've patterned and found acceptable for the distances I expect. I've also tried the Federal FliteControl. The tighter groupings were really, really impressive. I can understand why you'd never want to use anyth...

Re: Arsenal 107 vs DSA FAL voyager?

I'm a bit biased towards the FAL. I'd go with the FAL, but it's more of an emotional decision.
The Arsenal is a fine firearm and the platform is more efficient -7.62 nato is a bit overkill in most of the US.

Re: Six Guns Every US Prepper Should Own + 2 More that are a good idea

South Africa. There is a whole other problem set there. Thank you for your insights. Without any working knowledge of the area at all I would think that a bolt action rifle in a .30-06 or larger (some big game caliber) caliber would be a requirement. But I have never been there, The chances of runn...

Re: Mossberg 500 based home defense setup

Excellent info! Thanks! I do think people must consider the ranges they expect to use their weapon. My plans are for 10 yards and in, for apartment defense, so I'm ok with cheap walmart 00 Buck and Fiocchi low recoil. But as I start using my shotgun for 50 state travel, I expect I"ll need to look m...

Re: Mossberg 500 based home defense setup

I attended a "Combat shotgun" class about a year or so ago. I ran my wood stocked Mossberg 500. Other guys in the class had everything from Benelli's to an old 1897! My mossberg was outfitted: Wood stock 18.5" barrel with bead sight - cylinder bore 5 round magazine tube with no extension Surefire G2...

Re: Anyone have experience with 5.56 AKs?

I have seen AK's in terrible condition and they still fired. They were chambered in 7.62 though. That tapered case has a lot to do with the AK's reliability. Then add to that, the fact that AK's are heavily over gassed and you have a gun that will cycle yogurt... .223 AK's are interesting and if any...

Thanks Woodsghost! Always glad to share what very little knowledge I have
I browsed the boards on my phone using that Tapatalk app - and that got messed up, so I ended up not getting here as often. Decided to just access the forums using my PC, since I'm working from home tonight.

It's been a while since I've been here...missed the discussions! Merry Christmas everyone! I agree with the OP. CCW then a Pump shottie. Re: Responsibility and Accountability in a SHTF Situation

I'l relate a short story... South Africa has deteriorated since the advent of "democracy". Infrastructure is not what it used to be and emergency services are really lacking. Average response time for police is usually dismal, especially on farms (where some of the worst crimes are committed). Aroun...

Re: Anyone have experience with 5.56 AKs?

I may have mentioned this before... I owned 2 converted Saiga's in .223. They were very accurate and reliable...depending on magazines! I think the major shortcoming of .223/ 5.56 AK's in the US, are magazines. I was about to start work on my Saiga's to accept Galil mags, when I realized I'm going t...

Re: Anyone have experience with 5.56 AKs?

Not sure about the twist rate on the Arsenals...but results may have been affected if you ran too heavy ammunition through it. 77gr will not produce wonderful results in a 1/12 barrel.
Sorry to hear you didn't like it though. Arsenal has always had a solid reputation.

Re: Ideas on best bug out firearms?

I've gone back and forth on this issue for many years. Started out with a Sub2k in 9mm to match my Edc Glock. Then tried AK, AR and shotguns...came to the conclusion that I don't want to leave guns in a bag or car, so only going either my Edc now. If I HAD to keep a long gun of some sort, it would b...

Will go check it out. I don't want to be limited either, but based on my experience living under very strict gun control where you were licensed for a specific serial number and caliber and often limited to one rifle, one shotgun, one pistol (depending on how much money you have and thus what licens...

Re: The best minimalist PAW rifle?

Ha yes. I also learned to shoot on the Savage 24. In fact first thing I shot with it was a wild rabbit in a potato field. Followed by mamba and rinkhals (Mozambique cobra). Remember those days well as my grandparents took care of me at that point. Was too dangerous to live with my parents in the cit...
