Re: 2018 Hurricane Season

Not a whole lot, just checkin in on folks in harms way this week, I have some friends and family out that way, but pretty far inland. They're more worried about mudslides and road washouts than flooding. I seem to remember reading something about the NC legislature banning the use of sea level rise ...

Re: 2018 Hurricane Season

I seem to remember reading something about the NC legislature banning the use of sea level rise data for coastal planning purposes, too People were told to prepare to evacuate communities up and down a stretch of coastline already identified as particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels due to cli...

Re: CR123 Batteries

One note about "18650 vs 2xCR123" is that its not only the voltage difference: they're physically not the same dimensions. a CR123 is substantially thinner (2mm less) than a 18650 as well as not being slightly longer than 1/2 of an 18650 (340mm) and many lights are too skinny to accept an 18650. I k...

Re: US Army Tries (Again) to Introduce a Combat PT Test

Having done "combat" PT tests and "regular" PT tests, I don't know how I feel about this. Yeah, one is a better metric, but sounds logistically complicated. Plus, a fatty is a fatty regardless of test. Definitely more logistically complicated: it's all very equipment-dependent, which means you can ...

Re: Can someone explain this style of blade to me?

I'm sure your blades are top tier, man. All your work is great.

I just don't see how they do a machetes job better than a $40 stamped machete like the 100 million made before it, is all.

Re: Can someone explain this style of blade to me?

People will take any cheap tool and customize it until its ridiculously expensive. I've seen people selling forged machetes for $200. Or CNC'd shit. Machetes are supposed to be cheap as hell and made out of stamped flat stock, but whatever, people can buy what they want I guess. a $200 machete certa...

the main site and store are still down until Jeff gets back from travel to clean the malware bullshit out of all the PHP and him and kyle can put the main site back up. Both require extensive re-work to function right with the newer PHP we're running on now and we dont want a repeat of the malware i...

Re: US Army Tries (Again) to Introduce a Combat PT Test

It's not the boot itself, it's the sole. A glued on sneaker sole thats designed for cushioning the impact of your stride, even when affixed to a boot, is going to be way better for running than a heavy inflexible stitched-on full-welt sole because it results in less shock transmitted up to ankles, k...

Re: US Army Tries (Again) to Introduce a Combat PT Test

This is at least the fourth serious attempt to introduce a new PT Test since the 1980s that I am aware of. Don't know if it will get in traction. Running 2 Miles in soft shoes and shorts never made sense to me as a good metric to gauge combat effectiveness but commanders sure loved the shit out out...

Re: Active Topic Link?

Sorry about the bump back to prosilver, the PHPBB upgrade process made us remove all the old incompatible styles, of which subsilver (the most common style everyone used) was one. I just installed a new style called AllenStyle-subsilver that looks as close to the old one as is feasible. Most of the ...

I will when it comes back up. We're still closed for business until we redo the store portion of the website and re-enable payment processing for anything. The PHP hack that was injecting malware into the site was just some userspace BS that didnt have access to the store, but now that we're looking...

well, the old-board-new-committee is selling merch and memberships, that money is paying for our infrastructure: the google apps account we use for email and collaboration and storage space, the web server, the domain registration, etc. That part stays like it was. Re: FORUM UPGRADES: PHPBB 3.0.x to PHPBB 3.2.x

Sorry the outage took so long, the hack went in while everyone with access to the website was at Z-Con, and I happened to come back early with a mostly amputated pinky finger (dumb story) and all I could manage to do in a splint was turn off the web services until other people could get back and rec...

FORUM UPGRADE

To Everyone: The forums are back up but we're going to upgrade to PHPBB 3.2 and get off this old-ass version we've had for too long. Everyone is getting moved to the default PHPBB style, Prosilver, and if we can easily install some other themes after the upgrade, we will, but a bunch of these are wa...
