Re: Dealing with sleep deprivation
I eat sunflower seeds when I am not going to get enough sleep or otherwise expect to be tired. By nature I tend to get very sleepy on long drives at about four hours. However if I eat seeds for a while every time I get tired I can drive for far longer. I can do a 20 hour drive with seeds without nee...

Re: What's in your camera bag?
I don't carry a "Camera Bag". I carry a Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack as my EDC bag. EDC in it includes: Panasonic GH4 w/ Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 pancake lens (in Optech Soft Pouch Body Cover AF-PRO) Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 lens (In Optech Snoot Boot - Medium, all of this in the big side pocket, fits perf...

Re: Fictional consolidation of calibers
If it were me I would do 4 calibers at minimum. It is basically impossible to in any way represent the range of calibers in any other way. I would do the following: .22lr or "rimfire" 5.56mm .308 or 7.62 .450 or .50 It should be obvious what the difference really is but... .22lr is your most common ...

Re: Worst SHTF Handgun
Actually many people consider double-action revolvers to be one of the absolute best SHTF firearms. The reasons they are a good choice is: Mechanically they are much simpler than a semi-auto, therefore lasting longer, requiring less maintenance, and just generally being less likely to break or malfu...

Re: Firearm Categories
You don't want my full list of categories. It would be really long. For instance, this is what I came up with in a couple minutes for handguns. Longguns would be at least twice as long, and by the time I finished that list I would likely have more things to add to this list. 1.) Handguns ..A) Revolv...

The owner (who said he has been home all day, but evidently the care that he never loans out wasn't home with him) of the hit and run vehicle is not a real happy with me. NUK Seal N Go breast milk storage bags are a fantastic addition to a car, or any other, survival kit. They are super cheap, they take up almost no space or weight at all until you use them, and once sealed they won't spill unless you puncture them on accident. If you find a water source you filter i...

Meh.
I will stick with my XD-S and 5 rounds of .45acp in a package no wider and not much longer. Especially since SA also offers a properly designed 7 round extended magazine that allows me a comfortable full sized grip when I want it.

When the time comes go here:

You can plan out the entire PC and then share it here (or better yet on a serious PC site like the forums of hardocp.com) to get advice and confirm the parts will all work together.

Re: Zombie Fort.
Forget the garage door. It will go down too easy and is a massive security issue. Block off all lower floor entries permanently, and in a manner the zeds can't break through. You can kill zeds from the balcony, so your stair plan is fine. Reinforce the fence on the side and back of the house. If you...

It sounds like you could use the Chiappa X-Caliber.: http://www.chiappafirearms.com/product/2677 12gauge/.22LR O/U with 8 caliber inserts for 380-9mm-357mag/38sp-40S&W-44mag-45acp-410/45colt-20ga. Re: How would you build an emergency shelter?
Unfortunately the forest I would be most likely to visit and get lost in would not make things exceptionally easy on me. It is all tall trees with few low branches and limited undergrowth of mostly ferns and small bushes. It is also fairly wet. So getting around is easy, making shelter without an ax...

Re: .357 Magnum or .38spl?
I agree there is no reason to be confident that any pistol will stop an attacker in one shot. The only adequate research I have seen on this revealed two things.... First, that most handgun 1-shot stops are psychological, not physiological, and two that a bigger and more powerful cartridge does inde...

Let me start by reminding you that if we are talking about self-defense ammo, then we are talking about your LIFE in a life or death situation. Your priorities in choosing ammo should be: Keeping yourself alive. Minimizing risk of other innocents dying. Keeping yourself uninjured. Minimizing risk of...

I would call in a family emergency to get the next week off, just in case it didn't happen. I would call my sister that owns and lives on our bug-out property and tell her to get ready. I would have her round up everyone else in our family while I loaded up my family and gear and headed for her plac...

production lines You mean "production line" as in singular. Knowing Keltec, they will make 20 per year to keep supply down and demand up. Not hating, I like Keltec, but finding one of their long guns is like hunting unicorns. Actually as part of the retooling they have significantly improved the pr...

Just FYI, Kel-Tec has announced Gen2 of the Sub2k. It looks a lot better, is supposedly much stronger, and has a way nicer front sight. It should start coming out this summer, and I think they are moving their current sub2k production lines over to the new version. So it might not be as hard to get ...

How about a more practical reason: For whatever reason, you need to reach for your firearm. You're in a hurry, you're probably panicked, lighting conditions may not be great. This is not a good time to play, "Which ammo goes with which magazine goes with which firearm?" You need to know the gun, kn...

That covers all 6 (5.56 and .223 are two of the 6) of the top selling ammo's in the USA, helping to minimize the challenge of finding compatible ammo. Just curious.
