Re: Moving forward with homestead land search (with pics)

I have been struggling with dozer problems. Thankfully it has be low cost so far. 1st the radiator cap went 2nd that caused the thermostat to go 3rd now I am dealing with the loss of the drain plug for a final drive which makes the dozer unable to turn. Simple cheap fix, but to access the fill plug ...

Re: Ultimate off road vehicle?

Yes there are some fun vehicles out there, personally I have been lusting after the Volvo c303 and c304 since discovering them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2yC_KkQPIc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-GNa8Iuqas But there is a reason I opted for my Honda CRV and Chevy Silverado instead of somethin...

Re: Homestead land in the WA Okanogan

Well I started working the dirt road going up to my easement road. But started having trouble with the dozer over heating. A little time looking things over, and it seems the radiator cap was failing allowing the coolant to overflow and then the engine to over heat. So I just picked up a new radiato...

Re: Homestead land in the WA Okanogan

The dozer itself weighs aprox 10K, and the hoe about 2-3K. I don't mind going slow, and I wouldn't be hauling the dozer any great distances. As for modern trucks, yuck. No style and I definitely don't like electronics. If you need to attach a computer to it to work on it, then it is not my cup of te...

Re: Homestead land in the WA Okanogan

Thanks, I will keep that in mind for the future. It was a lot of cringe but thankfully got home safe. Especially amazing considering we had mountain passes to deal with and a long journey. If I knew back then what I do now, I would never have used either of those trailers. I likely would have paid a...

Re: Homestead land in the WA Okanogan

NT2C, yes I know a lot more now about hauling equipment now and the whole thing was filled with warning signs for anyone who has a little knowledge. I am a heavy equipment operator, but not hauler. I can run the equipment, but knew next to nothing about hauling or loading. This was a very big learni...

Re: Homestead land in the WA Okanogan

So of course I started doing some work with the dozer, shortly after getting it home. Though it was pretty dry and the dirt around my area is a fine dusty stuff, we call moon dust. So I was limiting myself to just a little work on the easement road. Smoothing a little out in anticipation of winter t...

Re: Homestead land in the WA Okanogan

So I had said I was going to do another photo dump before I headed back home but things got busy and I wasn’t able to put the time into making it happen before I left. So here goes the update I meant to post. Last fall I finally got the piece of heavy equipment I was looking forward to getting. I ha...

* edit to add, ok turned off the blocker and indeed reviews were there. Funny that was consider advertising by the blocker.

Re: Soft bear bags?

I did not see it on the updated list, but I think that list is just additions for new products this year. For REI to still be selling it, it should still meet all requirements. I may have issues with some of the pricing REI does, but they don't tend to offer low quality. They stand by every product ...

Re: Soft bear bags?

Hmm, not sure where you saw the review flybynight, I didn't see one when I looked at the link and still don't. That said, the review might be right, it clearly stated the bear bag did it's job, but was not happy with the odor barrier bag. I posted info on the question asked, not in reference to the ...

Re: Soft bear bags?

In the PNW those would be fine if hung by a branch 10ft in the air. If you want food stored on the ground you need the box/barrels. Something I did note from the product description is there is no built in odor barrier, and they recommend adding one. Ursack highly recommends using an OPSak odor barr...

Re: Homestead land in the WA Okanogan

OK here is some older pics I didn't get around to posting due to infrequent internet access. But will share to help give the progression I have gone through. 1st up I moved the trailer and installed my 400w solar set up. https://i.postimg.cc/4NsHhXpc/moved-the-trailer-for-the-2nd-yr.jpg https://i.po...

Re: Homestead land in the WA Okanogan

So this is 3 yrs worth of trash on my homestead that finally accumulated to 13 45 gallon bags, enough to finally take a trip to the dump. *edit to add (oops, this is an earlier pic of only 10 bags, I seem to have trashed the 13 bag photo) https://i.postimg.cc/1zmZpYJJ/13_bags,_3_yrs_of_trash.jpg Mos...

Re: Homestead land in the WA Okanogan

Glad to share, and maybe help inspire others to get out and do their own version. I know it was 30+ yrs of planning and gaining skills to get to this point. It didn't come easy, but it was worth it. Trailer life sucks, but once I get out of the trailer I totally remember how worth it it is. I have 4...

Yep rock mass heaters. There is one in the bedroom, and one in the kitchen plus the walker stove yet to be re designed which is basically a rocket mass heater that you can cook on. The two big tanks are a potable water left side grey water right. Size shape etc may vary, those were just quick exampl...

Re: Homestead land in the WA Okanogan

Earth shelter works great in practice if built right. Problem is most don't build them right, so they often get a bad rap. But a well designed and built earth home has massive benefits cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter, better noise control, low maintenance, storm resistant, wild fire resis...

So since I am here and actually have time and access to the internet due to visiting family. Good time to update the thread a bit. So my sketchup plans got lost when my computer died on me. I noticed a bunch of the image links were broken so I went back and fixed them, just wanted folks who might have visited and been disappointed that it is up and working now. I don't know how long the links were broken, no one let me know.
