Re: Pistols as primary

Pistol primary, plus a matching pistol caliber carbine in the pack (sub2k is perfect for this) as backup? If you need to engage a threat NOW, a CCW draw is perfect. If the threat is at rifle range... finding cover and drawing the PCC is an effective solution. Really, a rifle range threat should be e...

Re: Alternative sleep systems for BOBs

Personally, I differentiate between primary hiking/have to to pack so INCH gear, and stuff in a go bag style BOB. Weight/Size is critical in a grab and go bag, whereas if I'm climbing/hiking/etc I want that extra bit of performance out of that gear, and that would include the sleeping bags. For a go...

That's not surprising. The Chinese gov are more than happy to tell you what you want to hear while doing the opposite.

Funny thing - there isn't just one China, nor one Chinese community.

Developing mainland is a lot different than HK, Taiwain, or us bunch of global expats.

Re: Watches for long-term survival off the grid

I have a mechanical watch (via kickstarter) and a (decade old) Citizen Eco-drive skyhawk. Truly accurate sea faring and exploration wasn't possible until we were able to keep time accurately enough to shoot accurate and repeatable lines of position on the sun and later with other bodies (stars and o...

Re: Leaving a BOL/BIL to conduct Recon & Surveillance

A small UAV is definitely able to be sustainably powered. However, in SHTF, the GPS constellation might be down, so waypoint based nav wouldn't work. Which means more time/skill at the ground station.

That said, it's a short/medium term solution at best. If your creek is dry and you are drilling wells, so are your neighbors.

Re: General Prepping WWYD - When to invest and when to skimp

High use (EDC) and critical (if it fails, you're dead) items should be top notch. The first because of the amount of use amortizes the costs of better gear (fails less over time, etc). The second, because the obvious. (ie, climbing gear, cbrn gear, drivetrain components) Everything else? Deal hunt. ...

Goal one - find an AK.

Re: Recession proof emergency funds

Staying put? Beans, bullets, books.

INCH? small concealable bits of precious metals. There's a reason why our family's wedding gifts were that sort of thing. Since we had to GTFO of two different countries in two consecutive generations.

Re: SHTF and you can only have one gun

When I see those words written…”grey man” I immediately ask myself, has the writer been subjected to cold fear and shock? Could he or she really have meant “ashen?” You have a valid point though, either way. Although I think the only real possible answer is “the one that I have,” and since the rule...

Re: SHTF and you can only have one gun

Depends on the nature of the SHTF. Sure it does. No one was scared off by a big hunting story featuring one squirrel? LOL. But who, given the chance of 1, chooses 1? Yet, in the world of probability that is the answer. If I could have but one it would be the one I wanted at that moment. Still, the ...

Re: Vehicle Based Patrolling, Reconnaissance and Surveillanc

Depending on your area, a mountain bike might be a much better option. Doesn't burn up your fuel reserves, and quiet, so that folks won't be able to hear your coming from quite so far. Also doesn't give away 'high resource prepper group' vibes that your post-mad-max-world vehicles do. Downside - a ...
