Re: Intermittent fasting as a way of extending rations
Interestingly there was just a segment about Intermittant Fasting and it's effects on health on NPR (specifically the Diane Rehm show) this morning during my commute. The current show doesn't seem to be available online yet but they mentioned a previous show about Intermittent Fasting from January o...

Re: Smoke "Grenades" in a Get Home Bag?
The Enola Gaye website itself calls these "pyrotechnic devices" and indicates they throw sparks when ignited, emit smoke which can burn, and recommends you have fire extinguishers on-hand and only use them in controlled environments with direct supervision. If I were concerned about signaling in the...

Re: Smoke "Grenades" in a Get Home Bag?
Signaling: Again, who will be looking? Will they know to interpret the random plume of smoke as "someone needs help"? Military forces use smoke for signaling only under very specific circumstances and with extensive training. Distraction/Intimidation: If you're thinking that you'll scare off urban g...

Re: Smoke "Grenades" in a Get Home Bag?
Signaling whom? Will they be looking for smoke plumes? Will they be looking where you are? Distracting whom? Distracting them from what? Would a plume of smoke distract them? Intimidating whom? Will they be intimidated by a plume of smoke? Is it safe or legal for you to be deploying incendiary devic...

One thing you might add is some alternate rendezvous locations, if for example you need to evacuate the house while he is at the office. It's good to have an out-of-state relative or contact that you can both get in touch with in case of a local or regional disaster. You would both check in with the...

Re: Mr. Heater Buddy question
the reason you want to use it on the smaller containers is for portability. There are also safety implications to bringing a 20lb propane cylinder into your house. Almost all fire safety literature specifically warns against doing this. I use a Mr Heater Big Buddy in my one-car uninsulated garage d...

Re: Why not a live aboard blimp?
As an experienced "semen", ooops I mean "seaman"... I would say unless you wanna go skydiving, there are many perks to a boat. Boat: -engine dies, you can still steer with a rudder. No rudder, then use the emergency paddles. No emergency paddles, create drag to use with currents. -boat sinks, go to...

I think you guys are on the right track with this. Online meetings cannot replace the required chapter meetings, those need to be in-person, but the way you're talking about using it here sounds really good.

Re: Why not a live aboard blimp?
In a plane or boat, if the engine dies or something fails, it can coast or float or have some sort of emergency protocol. With a blimp, if the engine dies, you can't control it. If it leaks, there's no emergency landing. To be fair, I don't see much difference between a drifting uncontrolled boat a...

Re: AR-15 shooting way low with irons
I don't think the cant in the front post is so much causing the vertical deflection in POA vs POI, but it's a sign to me that something somewhere is hinkey. I wouldn't write it off as irrelevant so quickly. Having said that, consider the following: Assuming a 14.5 carbine sight radius, and given 900...

Re: AR-15 shooting way low with irons
One thing I noticed is a slight leftward cant on the front sight base. I compensated with the rear windage, and there is no gas port alignment issues so I thought it was no big deal. To my mind, ANY misalignment of the front sight is a sign of a problem and I'd be looking very closely for the cause...

Re: Is it REALLY possible to communicate the distances...
Setting aside all theoretical math, my real-world experience is that you can rarely expect to get more than a mile or two out of any blisterpack GMRS radio. Sometimes much less depending on terrain, buildings or foliage, etc. Best results of course come from having a clear unobstructed direct line o...

I'm a noob myself (not yet licensed) but in my limited experience lines-of-sight and antenna limitations are much bigger factors that absolute wattage, when it comes to a "starter HT that will see use in the mountains". Re: Interstellar 35mm worth it?
OK so I saw it in iMax, and I'll say two things:
1. I enjoyed watching this movie.
2. I wouldn't necessarily have felt cheated if I'd seen it on a smaller screen.
I will avoid saying too much more because spoilers, but I wouldn't make a two hour drive to see it in a larger format.
