I took a few PIX while bear hunting. Mostly from camp, but I did find a beech tree W/some (old) claw marks. I managed to snap a few shots of it

I will post them after I get them loaded to Photobucket.

Re: Budget Oberndorf Custom Mauser Just About Finished

ah gotcha. didn't realize 8mm was that expensive http://www.ammoengine.com/find/ammo/8x57mm_Mauser" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for ammo prices, but they aren't cheap for decent factory :( No rush on it. As long as you're happy with it, that's what matters. I was just curious for ...

Re: Budget Oberndorf Custom Mauser Just About Finished

i agree with you. I guess the 10 shot is more about testing the accuracy of the ammo not the barrel but from my basic (IE i'm in the class now) statistics knowledge, the more the better. 10 is better than 5 is better than 3.... but hey, just my thoughts. doesnt take away from the fact that its a sw...

Hmm, sounds like a task for my "Battleship".

I have a 2 place sprayskirt if anyone wants to double up.

I might just bring along the sailrig. It might come in handy if the wind is right.

Re: Budget Oberndorf Custom Mauser Just About Finished

Nice looking rifle, and it looks like it does the job, too. Can't beat that. :D The 8X57IS is one helluva round & it's sad that (in America) it's loaded to only 35,000 psi. That's barely @ 32 Special power levels. In Europe they load it to 30-06 pressure levels & my loads are just a bit over that (...

Re: Budget Oberndorf Custom Mauser Just About Finished

You did a great job on that rifle. I especially like how you were able to get that scope mounted as low as possible. Good luck with it out in the field. That is a very low scope. Well done. The action as it was would have required "high" rings & that was not acceptable. I ruined the spoon bolt hand...

Budget Oberndorf Custom Mauser Just About Finished

Re: Turning birdshot into slugs.

A friend of mine used to pour out the pellets and put in a stack of dimes. Really tore crap up. and you can use pre 1964 dimes for hunting werewolves Those dimes spinning & sailing through the air would have an effective range of about 10'. Even then, a heavy coat would probably stop one. That's ab...

Re: Trying to find a long range bolt gun.

Ok so I've decided on the Remington 700 in .308, for the ease of finding ammo and its relatively cheaper than some hunting specific rounds out there. Plus the remington 700 is easy to find parts for. The Glass will be a new thread when I get around to buying it. Fake edit.- I just saw in a local ac...

Re: Trying to find a long range bolt gun.

To the OP on the 7mm Magnum. As great a flat shooting round as it is as well as having great terminal ballistics and the ability to take basically every game animal in north america plus some. Don't get it if you're looking at more range time and less hunting time. Plane and simple it hurts. I can ...

Re: Trying to find a long range bolt gun.

As for the OP option choice of 7mm Rem Mag? I'd opt for the 280 Remington instead. It will be within 50-75 fps of the 7 mag when handloaded using about 15% less powder & THAT cartridge W/140gr bullets WILL have a faltter trajectory than a 30-06 & a 300 WM due to a higher BC @ any given mv used for c...

Re: Trying to find a long range bolt gun.

.308 should be fine for whatever range OP is shooting. 1 inch moa at 100 yards with trajectory thats generally flatter than 300wm or 30-06, .308 is one of the most common off the shelf loads On which planet will a cartridge W/a lower mv W/any given bullet choice have a "trajectory thats generally f...

I've heard its a wonderful round for hogs. When I was in the market for a 336, I did a a lot of reading up on it on the .30-30 vs .35. If it weren't all but impossible to find .35 remington here, I probably would have gotten it. Man, how things change! I remember reading that he 35 Remington being ...

Re: .35 Remington

Just checked for the hell of it while looking for some bulk .22lr ammo I checked the price here for .35 ammo. It was $35/box for Remington Federal V-Shok ammo. Sounds mighty expensive to shoot to me :P I got 200 rounds of Hornady leverevolution for $200, which is pretty good imho. It is not a plink...

My father recently offered me a .35 Remington-chambered Remington Lever action. Anything I should know about it? Re: .35 Remington

The 35 Remington is one of those rounds that "kills a lot deader than it should". Excellent deer & black bear medicine@ ANY iron sight ranges. It has even proven effective on Elk @ 150yds or less. (iron sight rabges) Much more capable than a 7.62X39 considering it hurls almost twice as much lead. 20...

Re: Longest Range Shot You've Ever Taken?

Well the longest shot I ever made was a bit over 300yds on a groundhog W/my 7mm-08. I was had time to recover from the recoil & see the mist when the bullet hit. My best long range shot was on a red squirrel @ about 250 yds. Made a neck shot on that sucker W/my 280 Rem. There was n't even much tissu...

well guys talk me into it or out of it. I got an urge to chop the barrel to 20in and remove the wood just infront of the sling band kind of like the michells tanker but with a 20in barrel instead of 16in. or maybe make it a manlicher style setup. I already have it all figured out and was curius of ...

Re: M1918A3 "BAR" - two thumbs up.

A BAR is hardly a "spray & pray" weapon as demonstrted by the OPs accuracy experience. I would hate to go up against a full auto BAR @ 500yds W/a SAW. Remember though, a real BAR fires from an open-bolt, which may reduce accuracy somewhat as that bolt slams forward. The cool thing about this, accur...

Re: M1918A3 "BAR" - two thumbs up.

Anyone ever seen a scope mount for a BAR? I doubt they exist since the BAR was used in much the same role as the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon is used for today. Original BARs were more spray and pray type weapons. A BAR is hardly a "spray & pray" weapon as demonstrted by the OPs accuracy experience....

Re: load 125 psp for Garand in PAW

A 125 grain 308 bullet has a poor ballistic coeficient. Drive it much beyond 7.62X39 mv & it will be erratic as far as wind drift, etc. Much beyond 100yds & it will be questionable for deer. Remember, "assault weapons" are designed to wound & incapacitate. That takes 2 -3 people out of combat. Killi...
