Re: Does backpacking gear color truly offend others?

I have never, ever, ever , ever, ever met a stranger with audacity to address my gear color choices while in the field. If someone were to do so, in anything but a positive manner, I would be so shocked as to possibly die of embarrassment for them right on the spot. Other people's gear choices aren'...

Re: I have an AR. I also have lions and tigers and bears. Oh

... break open [shotgun] would suffice for this task... The only thing I'd ever choose a break-open-shotgun over an AR-15 is for quail. The high-performance ammo suggested to really get the kind of penetration necessary to make shooting a larger attacking animal with a 5.56 is normally $2-3/rd. ......

Leave it to ZS to answer a "what projectile?" question with "you need a new gun..." Yes, generally when the easiest answer is "get the right tool for the job" a group of intelligent people will urge you to get the right tool for the job, particularly considering the low entry feed of the tool menti...

OK, so rounding things around back to the idea that it's 99% likely we'll have to solve this one with just ammo: 1) Black Hills 5.56NATO loaded Barnes TSX 50gr or 2) Some super-heavy soft tip bonded game load Inquiring minds want to know! ... Some super-heavy soft tip bonded game load is better (al...

Leave it to ZS to answer a "what projectile?" question with "you need a new gun...". Sworbeyegib is right. You want a hunting round, and anything meant for medium game in .223 will be your best bet. I use Sierra GameKings (not for cats, but for deer); however ANY modern hunting bullet will be damn n...

I'll enter a big +1 for the pro AccuTrigger comments. If you read the manual and adjust it out right, the AccuTrigger is reliable and sweet.

Re: 25K Rounds and Dropping

My pap-paw grew up in the depression. I remember the same damn box of buckshot and box of .243 lasted in his gun closet for near 4 years when I was living with him. That's with regular white tail harvests. You'll all live. Of course, it's easy for me to say because my reloading bench is healthily st...

Which explain's its limited usefullness to .mil, but I think that Jamoni's example of fixed civilian locations 50-200 miles apart is a great use of this propagation mode.

I had considered a small magnetic loop on my truck bed for NVIS mobile, but I think I'm going to go with a vertical on the bumper instead... I'm not sure to what extent you're simply not making it clear what you're trying to say vs to what extent you're misunderstanding the physics behind NVIS prop...

Re: NVIS for your PAW comm plans

I had considered a small magnetic loop on my truck bed for NVIS mobile, but I think I'm going to go with a vertical on the bumper instead. I've used this mode to some effect. The obvious key is that the signal will "land" about 50-200 miles away, so this is a great way to get propagation to the dist...

They aren't heavy (primarily) because of the construction methods, they're heavy because they used a design meant for very small calibers for larger calibers.

Effective and compact doesn't really happen on the 11m band. You get to chose one or the other. I've never owned those models, but Merrell and Danner and Columbia are the brands represented in our family's pile(s) of boots. The Danner and Columbia boots have all lasted much longer (more miles) that any of the Merrell boots. For what that's worth. That said, as far as Danners, I've owned Workma...

I admit it, I'm a plus one to the Ferrocerium Fire rod deally. I have tried it, but determined I'm better off with a carton of Bics. It's at the bottom of a tertiary first aid kit around here somewhere.
