Re: Knives Illustrated article

91Eunozs - I've got an 8" Benghazi Warfighter forged out sitting around the shop. I'll DM you. :) I sell both to individuals and dealers. My business model is changing somewhat. Instagram and Facebook have allowed me to post up a blade that I've forged which is not slated for anyone and it will get ...

Knives Illustrated article

If you pick up a copy of the November 2018 "Knives Illustrated" magazine, you'll see a well-written article about one of my knives by Waysun Johnny Tsai. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1842/44622077381_cbe840ed56_c.jpg article02 by James Helm , on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1857/446220775...

Re: Can someone explain this style of blade to me?

I got a knife from Storm Crow. It's been to places on the planet you couldn't imagine. Met the Russian Spetsnaz on the Ukrainian Contact line. Met the Tauregs in the Sahara.......I showed it to my grandson and told him "this is yours, and when you show me your ready, you can take this ". That's so ...

Re: Really nice, economical sheath maker on etsy.

Looks like some good, solid leatherwork. I'm jealous of those who can work leather. I tried a leather sheath once; it was sad. It's thermoform polymer sheaths for me! I can do them.

Re: Can someone explain this style of blade to me?

My Little Rok design is about a 4" blade. Every once in a while someone wants a 3" blade from me, but 4" is about as short as I go. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/835/42699331365_1b67b8d153_c.jpg midtech03 by James Helm , on Flickr Tall flat grind with a secondary bevel (not present in that pic as i...

Re: Current state of mid-tech knives(continuation from other thread)

JeeperCreeper - I need to shoot some video with all of the knives, especially the mini-parang, when everything is rolling. Here's an older version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dg7oBXQP3-Q&t=449s Halfapint - Prices are figured, and there have been small batches produced, but they've been ground b...

Re: Can someone explain this style of blade to me?

Moab - You have the right idea with priorities. :) I don't try to convince people to buy anything from me, I just post pics and explain my thoughts and construction details. What I make will be appropriate for some folks, and not appropriate for many more. There was a fellow who came on ZS years ago...

Re: Can someone explain this style of blade to me?

Thanks, Halfapint! Yep, at this point it's more a matter of trying to get work out the door than generate more interest, for which I am grateful. Shoot me an e-mail. I have some small blade pre-forms that I was going to forge for Blade Show and ran out of time. They might fit the bill for what you'r...

Current state of mid-tech knives(continuation from other thread)

I mentioned these in another thread and Moab showed interest. These have been in looooooong, slooooooow progress through more years than I care to contemplate, and are finally tantalizingly close to fruition. They've gone through several generations in small batches and this is the current one. All ...

Re: Can someone explain this style of blade to me?

As a preamble, I'm not trying to drum up sales, take offense, or give offense. It just struck me that my interjection could be seen as such. Just trying to give a bit of insight into an area of manufacture that is my niche that a lot of people aren't as engrossed by as I am. The big point ...

Re: Can someone explain this style of blade to me?

I think purpose and design has been covered decently in the video (is there a non-extreme survival situation?). Just a couple of comments from a knifemaker's perspective. $475 for a hand ground knife that size with a Kydex sheath is not outside the realm of the marketplace by any means. I won't pay ...

Pre-Blade Show Carcass Splitter

In the weeks leading up to the Blade Show, a knifemaker's life gets pretty crazy. One aspect, especially for full-timers, is moving along enough work for customers to be able to stay ahead of the bills while also building inventory for the show. Add to that equipment breakage, injuries, lack of slee...

Re: Bevy of bush swords

It's carbon steel, so rust happens. With the forge finish, it can be cleaned up with 100 grit or finer sandpaper or steel wool/ScotchBrite.

Bevy of bush swords

Some bush swords recently finished up and off to their new owners. All are 80CrV2 steel with marine epoxy-impregnated cord wraps and Boltaron sheaths. About a 13 1/2" blade, based on a wooden Filipino training sword the customer already had. Black on black wrap. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/974/42...

Pre-Blade Show commissioned knives

The Blade Show approaches with frightening rapidity, as usual. I have two tables and at the moment nothing ready. I did have this 5160 blade, but it sold within a few minutes of me posting it on Instagram. My wife wasn't too happy about that, but my pickup's transmission decided it needed rebuilt RI...

Re: Helm/Tendick Wakizashi/Tanto Daisho Collaboration

Thanks, guys! Dabster - I haven't gotten to handles these since sending them to Ben, but in my experience with wraps, you feel the overlay, but your skin doesn't really reach the underlay. Aszymetrica - No worries, I'll be making blades as long as I can! About to be in the pre-Blade Show frenzy. I d...

Helm/Tendick Wakizashi/Tanto Daisho Collaboration

Sometime last year I made an o-tanto that caught the eye of the very talented Ben Tendick of BRT Bladeworks in Oregon. We had been wanting to do a collaboration for a while, and it seemed like a good direction to go. The tanto was slated for someone, so I forged another, and ended up making a wakiza...

Camp chopper and Hisshou re-wrap

A couple more blades that have recently left my shop. The first is a camp chopper traded to another knifemaker for a kitchen knife for my wife. It's taken a loooong time for me to finish it up. It has a 13" blade forged from 80CrV2 steel, with a tan over black paracord wrap and tan Kydex sheath. htt...

Parangs and bolos

I recently forged out four choppers for inventory for the Blade Show, two parangs and two bolos. A couple of customers came along and laid claim to one of each design, so now I have one parang and one bolo for Blade. Better get hammering! They were all forged from 3/16" 80CrV2 steel and came out lig...
